Mama fell, broken shoulder

Mama fell, broken shoulder

Postby daffodyllady on Fri Apr 13, 2012 5:18 am

Mama, who lives with my sister next door to me, is two weeks short of being 87 years old. This morning, she was in the bathroom at about 2:30 AM, and sister heard a hard thunk. Mama had fallen, hitting the side of her head, and her shoulder. she is in the hospital, having tests done, to see what all got broken. So far, she has a knot on the side of her head, a jammed shoulder, and a splintered humerous head (top of the upper arm bone.)

She is on blood thinners ever since she had a heart attack about 8 years ago.
The danger is a possible embolism- a traveling blood clot.

Precious Mommy-- just got an update- she is being transported to a hospital about an hour away, to a trauma center. She has several broken ribs, and trauma to her head.

Oh Jesus... my precious Mommy! Please take care of her! She is ready- so very ready - to go Home. But we will grieve if she goes now!

6 cracked ribs.
Comminuted humerus fracture: broken ends jammed into each other, splintering into the joint.
Head contusions, lacerations... no internal bleeding seen on scans.

I'm heading to the hospital this evening, to trade off with my sister, taking night shifts.

Thanks for the prayers.

2 Timothy 2:24a..And the servant of the Lord must not strive ...
The meaning is, that the servant of Christ should be a man of peace. He should not indulge in the feelings which commonly give rise to contention, and which commonly characterize it. He should not struggle for mere victory, even when endeavoring to maintain truth; but should do this, in all cases, with a kind spirit, and a mild temper; with entire candor; with nothing designed to provoke and irritate an adversary; and so that, whatever may be the result of the discussion, "the bond of peace" may, if possible, be preserved.

Mom is home from the hospital.
She had been walking into the bathroom at 2:30 in the morning, leaning carefully on the sink counter edge with her whole right forearm. Suddenly, she either tripped or lost her balance, and pitched forward.
The countertop caught her right arm, throwing it violently backward, breaking the humerus right below the ball, at a sharp angle downward. This turned her as she fell, so that she landed on her left side. Her left arm folded neatly beside her as she landed on it, so the arm has only a bruise. But the bulge her arm made, created a perfect place to crack three ribs.
Her head struck the floor right above her left eyebrow, and a goose egg appeared within minutes. It has since drained into her eye socket and down in front of her left ear. So she looks like a kid who got into the makeup. It will look even more ghastly as the black and blue turns green.

They kept her overnight for observation, to make sure she wasn't bleeding in her head.
But they didn't realize she was diabetic, so her sugars got way too high, as they didn't give her meds, but DID feed her an average American diet! From the time we told them she was diabetic, it took half a day to get an order through to give her insulin. Even so, they overlooked putting on her kitchen order, to send her a diabetic diet, so that a full day later, she was still getting potatoes, bread, and sweet dessert, all in the same meal. Bad for her. Very bad.

They didn't want to let her go home, but my sister talked them into it. Wow, I never knew my sister could be so pushy! Good for her. We are slowly weaning her from the incredibly high dosage of morphine she was on. She was so out of her head that she couldn't put a full sentence together without going in 6 directions, not remembering what she had started with. She never even knew she had come home. This morning, she began to recognize her room at home. What a relief.

It will be an uphill battle, caring for her. But my sister is a pro. She will be ok.
The doctors and physical therapist were all surprised how strong my mom is. Her bone strength is also surprisingly strong, with very little osteoporosis yet, even at age 87!
For most of her life, she milked a cow by hand, and has drunk raw milk...

I have no doubt that she will receive much better care at home, than in the hospital. She sounds like one tough lady.

Thank you, everyone, for praying for Mama!

She was on a very strong pain medication that made her go out of her head... She was able to get a little sleep on that medication, but she would wake up totally out of her head, and at those times, she could only speak fluent Pennsylvania Dutch! (She was raised in a church almost exactly like the Amish.) My sister knows a little PA Dutch, and her husband speaks it well, as he grew up Amish. So they got it translated fine... but it was indeed amusing.

Mom's medication has been changed, to something that tends not to create such problems. Hopefully, my sister and my Mom can sleep tonight. They are both exhausted!

We are hoping to get some church ladies to take shifts, to relieve my sister of having to do this round the clock.

And yes, Mom's eyeshadow is turning varying shades of ghastly green. Not a pretty sight.

I imagine that must have been one of life's endearing moments.
Hoping your mother gets better soon.

Update:

Mama is improving much faster than the Home Health RN expected. Yesterday, she was able to sew twelve 6-inch square blocks into a strip... She used to do 8 of these strips in a day, but this one strip made her pretty tired.

Today, she was able to go in the car to visit the bone specialist, who confirmed what we expected: she is too old to face surgery. They will allow the arm to heal crooked, instead of trying to pin it in place. She came home pretty tired, and slept most of the rest of the day. I dropped in to see her this evening, and was very pleased to see that her bruises are fading fast.

I told her that her attitude of not complaining is so inspiring.
Her response: "What do I have to complain about? God LOVES me!"

Today is her 87th birthday! She just might make it to 100. One of her aunts is 100 years old, and still cleaning houses!

I so glad to hear she is doing so well. I hope she recovers the full use of her arm. Tell her she is an inspiration to me, too, right now.
