Having A Humble Heart

Postby Be still on Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:21 am

Having a humble heart is a precious trait. Why is it so hard for so many to attain? Why is pride and arrogance so hard to abandon?

"Come to me all, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11: 29.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Matthew 5:
5Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

Job 23:10-11
10 But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

11 My feet have closely followed his steps;
I have kept to his way without turning aside.

John 3:
30He must become greater; I must become less.

John 12:24-25 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

2Corinthians 4:10-12
Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

2Corinthians 4:16-17
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

2Timothy 2:11
It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him.
Karen
I think a big part of it is because nowadays people don't really know what it means to be humble. The preachers teach "you've gotta be humble, you've gotta be humble like Jesus was humble"....but where the description of what humble is? Its the same thing as when a math teacher starts telling the class that they have to solve a quadratic equation, but doesn't tell them how to do a quadratic equation first. In order to do something, or to be something, you must first know how to do it.
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood up and prayed about[a] himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
13"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

14"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Karen
Romans 12

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
Karen
Romans 12

Love

9Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Practice hospitality.
14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. It's easy to humble yourself before God but it's the humility towards our fellow man that is the real proof that our humility is real.

When humility lives in us, actually becomes part of who we, part of our very spirit are we fit to be in the presence of God.

The real humility is not how we act in prayer to God (like the Pharisees) but how we act in our everyday ordinary life with our brothers.

Our daily life is the true test of our eternity because it proves what spirit really possesses us. It during this time that we really see and show who we really are. Isn't this what Jesus taught?

He saw how the Pharisees clamored for the best seats at dinners and in the synagogues. So what did He do? Jesus gave the example of washing their feet. Talk about humility?

Humility before God is nothing if not proved in humility before men.
To the Romans He writes: "In honor preferring one another"; "Set not your mind on high things, but condescend to those that are lowly." "Be not wise in your own conceit." To the Corinthians: "Love," and there is no love without humility as its root, "vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, seeketh not its own, is not provoked." To the Galatians: "Through love be servants one of another. Let us not be desirous of vainglory, provoking one another, envying one another." To the Ephesians, immediately after the three wonderful chapters on the heavenly life: "Therefore, walk with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love"; "Giving thanks always, subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ." To the Philippians: "Doing nothing through faction or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind, each counting other better than himself. Have the mind in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and humbled Himself." And to the Colossians: "Put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering, forebearing one another, and forgiving each other, even as the Lord forgave you." It is in our relation to one another, in our treatment of one another, that the true lowliness of mind and the heart of humility are to be seen. Amen?
Karen
1 Kings 21:
25 (There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife. 26 He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel.)

27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.

28 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite: 29 "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son."
Yes, but what is humility? What does it mean to be humbled?

It is one thing to tell a salesmen to go and be a salesmen, but it is another to show him how to make a sale.

It is one thing tell someone to cook a meal, it is another to show them how to cook.

It is one thing tell someone solve a math problem, it is another to show them how to solve the problem.

Likewise, it is one thing to tell a person to be humble, it is something else entirely to teach them how to be humble.

If all those secular things you cannot do without being taught, why do we always seem to expect that people are just automatically going to know how to be humble?
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~
I think dying to self is the first step. It will start us on a journey to humility, strengthening of our faith and hopefully holiness.
Karen
:D When God humbles you, you will know it. It is not a pleasant experieince, especially if at first you do not see it as that. Looking back I am thankful that God stopped me in my tracks because I was headed for a much worse fall.

Sorry, I know that isn't really answer to your question.

I think humility is putting everyone else before self. Trying to please others more than ourself. Not in any way trying to draw attention to ourselves. Yeah, it might make us look stupid to some people, but if it is for the good of the faith, we'll do it.

I believe the reason why it is so hard to have humility is because it is our nature to be proud, the opposite of humility. Satan is constantly encouraging us to be proud, and it is our nature. Humility comes with major self-denial and taught by the spirit.

I noticed how I can pray to God very sincerely for humility and expect God to grant me humility by just putting it in my heart. God can do that, but I noticed that more often he teaches it to me rather than just making it appear in my heart. How does he teach it to me? By making me go through some very humiliating experiences in life. When God puts these experiences in my life, I resist and resist and do whatever I can to get out of them, and usually never realize till afterwards that God was answering my prayer. After I realized that, it took more faith to pray for things like humility or patience, because that means I may have a horrible day coming (earthly speaking), but what a benefit it is later. Keeping this in mind helps go through trials and learn humility better.
