Spinal chord injury/ Update ! Tumors

Postby GodsStudent on Sat Feb 04, 2012 10:09 pm

Hi fiends, brothers and sisters in Christ. may I please ask for your prayers. I injured my spinal chord and am having severe pain, numbness from the knee down, and I cannot stand for more than a minute or two. from what I understand about this injury, it appears to be serious. I am under doctors care and testing is underway. I hurt myself around nine days ago, and we are not seeing the needed improvements. Please, I ask, that yu will join me in asking the Lord's will for my situation. please pray the Lord will watch over me and guide me to the right circumstances as I navigate the process of what will come. I pray the Lord give my husband and family the strength and perseverance to weather this situation with me and that the Lord hold me close so that I can steadfastly praise Him through this time. in Jesus name I ask ....amen.

:( Yesterday was a two week mark and I thought I was feeling a little better when I woke up. I hadn't taken the pain pills and muscle relaxers when about noon, I leaned forward slightly to pick something up with both hands and something went wrong, and I've been in agonizing pain since. I did not sleep last night, because I have nerve pain coursing through the left side of my body, my mid back is screaming with constant sharp pain, and even my knee to foot, which is still numb, is now having pain in it that I can feel. I will be at my Dr's office when the doors open this morning. I am still in need of your prayers, please. Thank you. Lisa

Edited to add that the item I was picking up weighed less than five pounds. it appeared to be the motion of using both hands and leaning forward slightly that caused this issue to happen.

Dearest Yeshua,

Thank You for the perfect design of our bodies. You have fit everything together to work perfectly. Thank You for the muscles that are guarding the injury in her back. I pray that she can get the right diagnosis and treatment. Please protect her from any permanent damage Lord. Give her some relief and reassurance today. Amen.

:( MRI results came today....I have several tumors on my spinal chord. No herniated discs, but the tumors are pushing the spinal chord out of frame (for lack of better way to describe this.). I am told I will need additional tests now. looks like the road just got a little longer....may God's Will be done....

What a day. This is truly a case of not knowing whether to laugh or cry. You guys won't believe this!

I went to my Dr. today. The nurse brought in the MRI results and it wasn't the right one, it was my MRI from last year. I pointed that out and asked to see the MRI results which described the tumors I have in my spinal chord. The nurse got a strange look on her face and said "tumors, hum?" My husband and I explained that yesterday the nurse had called and told me I had tumors on L1-L2 and on L4-L5. The nurse came in and out of the room a few more times. Then, she asked my doctor about that MRI that shows the tumors and my husband and I heard him say the word "tumors" in what sounded like a question. My husband and I looked at each other. I reminded him that yesterday my doctor wasn't in the office and the nurse said another doctor read the results and told her to call and what to tell me (per the nurse who called me). I told my husband I was surprised the whole day had passed and it appeared my doctor didn't even know, yet, that I had tumors...that's what it was sounding like. I was also relieved, because deep in my heart I was upset that my doctor of so many years had left it up to a nurse to give me this kind of news and hadn't been in a hurry to talk to me.

then.....

My doctor comes in the room with some papers. I asked him "Dr. xxxxx, do I have tumors in my spinal chord? He said, no, Lisa, you don't have tumors. I burst into tears, I was hyperventilating (first time I've ever done that). My doctor and my husband were trying to calm me down as I recalled to my Dr. the events of yesterday's phone call. I was so upset, but on the other hand.....the relief of what I was no longer facing......overwhelming. I have no idea what all my doctor said, but I did hear a few things, such as the MRI shows a serious fracture at disc L4-L5, and that the doctor who read my MRI did recommend further testing due to the bulging at the nerve root, which could be the nerve root, a tumor or the gel that came out of my burst disc. My doctor was very upset at yesterdays events and promised to get to the bottom of that.

For now, I am on my way to see a surgeon and get my broken disc repaired. They may also have to do something about two other discs that have some sort of issue, but of course my doctor and I didn't cover any of that today as the entire visit was some kind of fiasco, honestly. So....we have yet another update, and this one is quite fantastic. All of a sudden, surgery on my spine doesn't seem like such a big deal ..... ...(but my mother calmly reminded me that anytime someone operates on a spine, it actually is a big deal)......I haven't gotten over the great news of no tumors to recognize that again.....

That is great news, GodsStudent. And hopefully , they won't have to operate. I know a few people who have just had to wear a very uncomfortable body/cast/brace thing. But it depends on the fracture. But even surgery is better than what you may have been facing.

Lisa,

I am laughing and crying with you girl!!! Whew! We fix broken vertebrae often at my work. It is a great procedure and the pain relief has shown good results. PM me if you have any particular questions OK? BTW, if you have frail bones now, you might end up fracturing more over the years. Ask your doctor what he recommends for your bones to increase their density/strength.

Dearest Yeshua,

Thank You for being in control. Thank You for continuing to give her strength and encouragement as she gets her treatments and heals. Guide her care and give everyone skill and compassion. Help her to trust You and Your timing for all of these things Lord. Amen.

Thank you everyone for your continued prayers.

The surgeon has sent me for more tests to include another MRI. It appears there are even better magnifications on some machines, and he needs more clarity, this nerve root mass at L4-L5 needs further identification. I see him again Tuesday morning, as soon as the holiday is over and everyone returns to work. I'll keep you posted. Please keep praying, and thank you so much for offering prayers on my behalf.

The new MRI shows the disc burst on the side right where the nerves come through. As a result, the disc is compressing or pressing down the nerves, which is why I am still in so much pain (injury happened January 24). The surgeon suggested that because there is so much inflammation right there at the nerve root, it would be prudent to see if steroid injections right into the damaged area would cause the swelling to go down, and alleviate the symptoms. Since this is on the side and not where spinal bursts are typically found (Dr. says that less than 1% of all spinal chord herniations happen where mine is, it's extremely rare), but since the injury happened here, there is a decent chance that if we can get rid of the inflammation, we won't have to do surgery. On the other hand, since I cannot walk with this right now, if the injections don't work, I will have to get the surgical repair.

Please continue to pray, and thank you for your prayers. Lisa

Still waiting for my first injection in the spinal chord. I am getting some feeling back below the knee now. Sometimes it tingles, sometimes it's screaming nerve pain, and sometimes it almost tickles. I have tried to go without painkillers, but I can't sleep without them and I have to take it really easy, which I think I should do anyway in order that my spinal chord repair itself some. Thank you for praying on my behalf. This event has made a big impact on my life in so many ways, and if I could choose....hehe....but I can't choose, and in some ways it has blessed me so much. More time with my daughter to just sit and laugh and talk. My husband has been amazing and so good to me through this thing...I have a lot to be thankful for. Sometimes you have to live a thing to really gleen all that's in it....

I'm eager to give you good news, too, Laney! Rit now I am in a process. Given the circumstances, today went stellar. I got some bad (ish) news about the injury. It appears my disc was split all the way from side to side, so it's a very "scary" hernia ton. The doctor was stunned by the injury, but .....
The Lord is in control.
In The meantime, the procedure went well. The doctor was in control, managed the intensity of the situation well, and was proficient in that he couldn't have been more steady and skilled. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the numbness I was supposed to have after the procedure...in fact nothing felt numb at any point ever....but ....
I took my medication, asked my husband to take me to get a movie to distract me, and my daughter picked a PERFECT movie for us to watch...it was such a perfect family night. several friends called and couldnt have been better to me as they pateintly and lovingly made me laugh and caringly listened as I reviewed my laundry list of 'stuff" in an effort to process and move forward.

At the end of the day, I found myself thanking God for all of the wonderful answers to prayers I know many of you have sent up on my behalf. All things considered, today was a perfect day and it went as well as sit could have.

The injury is in God's hands. If I don't get results with this, I will have to go to the next level with the surgeons. That will involve me seeing both my surgeon and another who I will need to consult with for another opinion.

Please pray the Lord's Will be done. please pray for me, for blessings and special grace and direction for those in my life whom this affects, and whom are being affected by it. Please pray that the Lord work through the doctors who are handling my case.

Thank you for your prayers! :hugs:

Thank You for continuing to hold her through this situation. Lord, You are in control and I trust You have the best plan for her. Please guide the physicians as they decide which course of treatment is needed next. Please bless their hands and efforts and heal her body. Lord, fresh strength for her today. Please give her some relief from her pain. Guard her heart and mind against the evil that wants to make her doubt, worry, or fear. You are above all things, in all things, and Creator of all things. From the very beginning, I had the name of a certain neurosurgeon who, if my spine had to be operated on, should do my surgery. Problem was, when I called
his office, I was told he was taking new patient apps. For September. I was also told that for more serious cases, they were scheduling for late April. As I was sure he was the one I needed to operate on my spine, I accepted that and called his office again last week and asked that he look at my MRI and they let me know if he could...would...see me. I got the call. They said he had been handling emergency cases for a week straight, but that he had finally seen my MRI and wanted to see me today...immediately.

I saw him, and he ultimately told me that I have a very large tear in my spine, that I should not be walking around with this severe injury, and that it needs immediate repair. His office is scheduling with the hospital for an OR first thing in the morning. We expect my surgery to take place next week, as soon as I can get registered, pre op done, and we can get a slot in the hospital for OR and then room.

I can't thank the Lord enough that He gave me my surgeon's name so early on, and that upon seeing my MRI, my surgeon literally cleared out a space for me, same day, and is doing the surgery immediately. It has been grueling since Jan., when this happened. I only sought my surgeon last week, and his response, though a little disarming in its sheer urgency, is most appreciated, and not so unexpected, as I knew my injury was severe.

I am sad it has to happen, yet overjoyed and at perfect peace, because I have been praying through this thing, and all along, this Dr., someone I've never met before today, was going to be the one to operate on me. Things have fallen into perfect place....in an imperfect world where many things can go very wrong. I know the Lord is with me, and has been with me all along...and I love the Lord!!!

I pray He meets me, my surgeon, the surgical staff, and my husband, at that hospital on the day my surgery is to happen. As long as the Lord is there....I will be fine, no matter what happens.

Dearest Yeshua,

Thank You for leading GS to this doctor and for allowing all these events to fall into place. Lord, guide her each step along the way. Protect her. Heal her. Grow her faith. Give her strength for each day and minimize her discomfort. I pray this surgery is a big success with no complications. Let her family be excellent helpers for her through all of the preparations for surgery, recovery, and rehab. Thank You Lord. Amen.

Praying that God will guide the surgeon's eyes, hands and intellect for the best possible outcome for you.

Deuteronomy 4:30-31
When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

. . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . .

13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
Psalm 119:105; Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
