Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible
By Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent
THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.
The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.
“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,” they say in The Gift of Scripture.
The document is timely, coming as it does amid the rise of the religious Right, in particular in the US.

Well, evidently the original title of the document issued by the bishops was "The Gift of Scripture." In publishing the document, the Times of London titled it "The Catholic Church no longer swears by the truth of the Bible."

The roman catholic web site Catholic Culture.org notes the "firestorm" that was triggered by the article and attempts to explain why by saying:

Such statements are common these days from catechists, theologians, and biblical scholars. They are trying to express something important — that there are certain things we should not expect from Scripture — but they have not used the right language in expressing these facts.

The article traces the history of the Church's belief back to Vatican II which attests to the complete inerrancy of scripture and is their current position. If I'm reading their explanation correctly, what they are trying to say is that because of cultural differences and language, it's difficult but necessary to discover the author's original intent.

Bottom line is that Catholic Culture. org is correcting the way the bishops' articulated the article.

What's most interesting is the weight the ecclesiastical hierarchy carries in determining and defining what the members of the catholic church will and will not believe and under estimates members' ability to study and understand scripture for themselves.

I had to take a study of Western Religions course my first year in college. I was studying music and had to attend a Catholic 2 year private college to study with the Music Teacher I wanted to study under. Anyway, the teacher of this course was a nun in the phelician order. I argued with here day in and day out about the truth of scripture. Her order does not believe in old testament miracles like the parting of the red sea. She just believed that these were just stories. Well needless to say I got an A in the course and excused form having to take the final, but was just amazed at the non-acceptance of the bible as a whole.

Stuff like this just smothers the cinders of faith for catholics who also really are christians. Its hard enough to defend even staying these days, nevermind get smacked in the face with garbage like that. If Christian churches are smart, they will step up outreach to faithful catholics who are longing for respect and a deeper love for Jesus. I was there a time ago, still am "technically" catholic, but went to a christian church over 10 years ago. they have had multiple pastors though and I have not gone in a while because of hubby....

'Was listening to some beautiful Christmas music - so lovely that it brought tears to my eyes. So I asked my youngest daughter, 16, who was doing homework, "I wonder what all the angels in heaven sound like when they are singing Glory to God?"
Without hesitation, she simply replied, "Warm."

drdos,
I graduated in 1985- (Interior design) what are the chances??? Small world huh?, I still live in the Buffalo area about a half hour from Villa, where are you at?

I cannot remember that little nun's name can you? She was a spunky little bird, and I aced her class too, always defended my faith in my assignments, despite her views I still liked her.

hahahaha Yeah she was full of Spit and Vinegar for sure. Man I can't remember her name(could have been Sister Mary Elep..... just kidding). Man people in that class probably hated me, because I just could not allow her to wrongly interpret scripture... All in all though it was a fun class for me.. My music theory teacher was Sister Barb that's about all I remember. Yeah I moved to Colorado to get my Doctorate in Music, but God had different plans for me. My whole family still lives in Buffalo. I love Buffalo. The people and the FOOD are both terrific.

LOL It must drive those poor Catholic teachers crazy when they have Christians in their class that will not remain passive as the bible is railroaded. Wish I could csee that.

Having grown up in a totally Roman Catholic family and culture and having been educated in all Roman Catholic schools and having been a practicing Roman Catholic for almost 50 years before the Lord Jesus saved me by His wonderful grace.....I can look back and say that I really don't think the Catholic Church ever did swear by the truth of the bible as the title to the thread implies. The Roman Catholic church has always denied the Truth and authority of the Revealed Word of God and that is what has led it down the path to a false gospel, a different Christ, different mediators, etc.

Same background here. I grew-up in the Roman Catholic church. Went till I was 13 all the way up to confirmation. Then I got saved like 6 months later. I heard the gospel through a preacher at an AG church. I was invited to go to the church by a friend, and gave my heart to the Lord that night. All I can say is Praise You Thank You Lord Jesus!

drdos, if you ever are in town to visit family, pm me first and maybe we can meet for lunch or something. I'd love to meet a member of my FP family in person.

Have either of you, (RT and/or drdos) ever attended what catholics called "prayer meetings" years ago? Just wondering. I attended on a fairly regular basis years ago at a catholic high school on Sunday evenings. They held in one of the large rooms with chairs in a circle, anywhere from 40-50 in attendance and were wonderful. Nothing like a room full of catholics who just found the Lord and have been set free!
