Super Moon 3/19/11 could cause issues

Postby drdos on Mon Mar 07, 2011 2:59 pm

Coming up later this month (March 19 to be exact) the moon will make its closest approach to Earth (called lunar perigee) in 18 years. A new or full moon at 90% or greater of its closest perigee to Earth has been named a "SuperMoon" by astrologer Richard Nolle. This term has been recently picked up by astronomers. An extreme "SuperMoon" is when the moon is full or new as well as at its 100% greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth. By this definition, last month's full moon, this month's and next month's will all be extreme "SuperMoons".

'Supermoon' Has No Connection to Japanese Earthquake

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/supermoon-japan-earthquake-tsunami/story?id=13097014&page=2

Paquette told ABCNews.com that he wants to remain "neutral" on the topic but said, "I do think it's possible that it could bring earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or anything weather-related as well."

But Williams said there's no reason to believe that anything out of the ordinary -- aside from an especially big and bright full moon -- will take place next week.

Come on ladies, do we really need an excuse? :bag:

This thread made me think of the movie where what's his name plays God and pulls the moon in closer for a romantic scene with what's her name. It was truly a 'supermoon'.

For some, it inspires romance. For others, it elicits madness.

NASA says its "bombing" mission yielded the best evidence yet of water on the moon. But since time immemorial, people around the world have been bewitched by the full moon, convinced it influences the human psyche and the rhythms of nature.

If you looked outside last night, you might have noticed this month's full moon. And if you caught yourself blaming bizarre behavior or strange events on the cosmic phenomenon, you likely weren't the only one.

Nurses have reported full moons leading to more chaos and more incoming patients. Police have linked full moons to aggressive behavior.

Studies have debunked the connection, though some experts say the increased light could contribute to a rise in mischief-making.

But then why do moon superstitions persist?

"The moon is regular in its cycle, but it's not so absolutely regular that it didn't take time for people to figure it out," said Brady, "It seems to link psychologically with the nine months of the human gestation period and the woman's menstrual cycle, and that linkage has always fascinated people."

Hey, don't scoff. It so happens that it is not only women who have mood changes that vary with the moon, but men do also. To any wife of a moody man; I challenge you to chart his moods over several months, and see if there aren't any patterns observed.

It is also well-known in medical circles, that if a woman has problems with irregularity in her cycles, she can often help the situation by turning on a night-light during the week of full moon. The brain is stimulated by light even while you are asleep.

Doesn't it make sense, if the moon can affect the ocean waters so profoundly, that our bodies, which are mostly water, are also naturally in rhythm with her cycles?

Oh yeah! That's right! We were supposed to have that big earthquake here by today!

Well, if they keep predicting disaster, one of these times, they'll be right!

Actually from everything i've read and heard the window for something to happen is between March 19 - 26 ... but this is not just California area but also the New Madrid Fault as well. Take it for what it's worth. As has been said if they keep perdicting one day they will be right.

Daffy, I wasn't scoffing. I was actually laughing at myself because I didn't understand what the moon had to do with menstrual cycles until I read about. :cheeky:
