The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a period of increased seismic activity occurred on Feb. 2, beginning at 3:30 p.m. MST. This period of increased activity lasted about 6 hours and included at least 2 events that were reported felt in Yellowstone National Park. The two largest earthquakes during this sequence were magnitude 3.1 and 2.8 that occurred at 7:31 p.m. and 7:44 p.m. respectively.

These earthquakes are part of an ongoing swarm in Yellowstone National Park that began Jan. 17, (1 p.m. MST).

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A rare earthquake shook New Brunswick Friday just before midnight, Canadian authorities said.

The 3.2-magnitude quake hit about 11:49 p.m. local time .

"It was just large enough to be felt," Natural Resources Canada seismologist Sylvia Hayek said. "We'll get a few in a year. A lot of them just go unnoticed because they're too small."

http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/Displa ... 101442.xml

TAIPEI: A strong earthquake of at least 6.3-magnitude struck under the seas off Taiwan and Japan yesterday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and Taiwan’s seismology service did not issue any immediate tsunami warning, although the Japanese weather agency issued a minor tsunami alert

I'd love to see those graphs if we can. Is there any way you could post them as jpg's? If not, then perhaps you could email them to me? Let me know and thanks for offering to share. We made a chart of those years too, but only for our area. It would be interesting to see the entire info on a chart.

Yes, I know its just a 4.3 - but it was centered about 15 miles west of my house. It woke us up at 4AM. We're new to this whole earthquake thing, since I don't remember any ever being centered this far north in Illinois - though we have gotten them much farther south from the New Madrid fault.

Viewers as far away as Milwaukee, Indiana and Iowa have reported feeling the earthquake.
Earthquakes are rare across Northern Illinois, but when they do occur usually they are less than 5.0 on the ricter scale.

We live in a suburb about 25 miles south of Milwaukee and as far as I know we didn't feel it. But its kinda exciting to know that another earthquake happened in a "rare" place.

Got this in an email. Thought this would be a good place to post it but Mods, feel free to relocate appropriately.
Earthquake survival 'TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON THE: 'TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the
American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most experienced
rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an
earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from
60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member
of many rescue teams from many countries.

I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years. I have
worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for
simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City
during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was
crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying
down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene, unnecessary and I
wondered why the children were not in the aisles. I didn't at the time know
that the children were told to hide under something. I am amazed that even
today schools are still using the "Duck and Cover" instructions- telling the
children to squat under their desks with their heads bowed and covered with
their hands. This was the technique used in the Mexico City school.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling
upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space
or void next to them. This space is what I call the 'triangle of life'. The
larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the
object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the
person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time
you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the 'triangles' you see
formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a
collapsed building.

TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Almost everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when buildings collapse ARE
CRUSHED TO DEATH. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are
crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You
should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. That
position helps you survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to
a sofa, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a
void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an
earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If
the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also,
the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings
will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less
squashed bodies than concrete slabs. Concrete slab buildings are the most
dangerous during an earthquake.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll
off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a
much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the
back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor,
next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the
door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a
sofa, or large chair.

6) Almost everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is
killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or
backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls
sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be
killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of frequency
(they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and
remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural
failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they
fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the
building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a
likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not
collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by
fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest
of the building is not damaged.

8) Get Near the Outer Walls Of Buildings Or Outside Of Them If Possible - It
is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the
interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the
building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in
an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened
with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the
San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all
killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and lying in the
fetal position next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived
if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them.
All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars
that had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and
other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids
are found surrounding stacks of paper.

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct.
The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul , University of Istanbul
Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific
test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten
mannequins did 'duck and cover,' and ten mannequins I used in my 'triangle
of life' survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled
through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the
results.

The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly
observable, scientific conditions, relevant to building collapse, showed
there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my
method of the 'triangle of life.' This film has been seen by millions of
viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe , and it was seen in
the USA , Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

Spread the word and save someone's life... The entire world is experiencing
natural calamities so be prepared!

These earthquake graphs are based on all available USGS data from 1973 to 2008 for all events world wide. The 2009 data is still trickling in so I'll update the graphs if/when that data is made public.

They are broken down by magnitude:
3.0 to 4.9 shown on one graph
5.0 to 6.9 shown on one graph
7.0 to 8.9 shown on one graph

The x axis on each is expressed in years. The y axis is expressed in number of events (earthquakes).

eq3.0-4.9.jpg
eq3.0-4.9.jpg (99.02 KiB) Viewed 6775 times

eq5.0-6.9.jpg
eq5.0-6.9.jpg (83.19 KiB) Viewed 6788 times

eq7.0-8.9.jpg
eq7.0-8.9.jpg (115.58 KiB) Viewed 6791 times

The 3.0 to 4.9 graph is probably of limited value because the number of sensors in use world wide has undoubtedly made the detection of these small quakes more effective over time. For example, there were a lot fewer sensors world wide in 1973 so a lot fewer small quakes were recorded. I have elected to include the graph because I think that the later portion (say from 2000 onward) is probably sampled from a more constant count of sensors and even in those years we see dramatic increases.

Larger quakes are detectable from a great distance away, without the need for so many sensors, so the graphs for the larger magnitudes are more informative, not being significantly effected by the total number of sensors installed over time.

All of the graphs show a trend line (the smooth bold curve) labeled as 'Poly' with the magnitude range they represent. Thay were calculated via a 2nd order polynomial. (Statisticians can explain to all of us what that means, but it sounds cool! I just wish I could find a way to include '1.21 giga-watts' into the description some how! ).

I believe these graphs are most informative as they show that earthquakes in all classes are, on average, on the rise. Even if we ignore the preponderance of data in the 3.0 to 4.9 magnitude graph, we can still see that for the period from 2004-2008:
3.x events increased from roughly 8000/yr to roughly 10300/yr - a 29% increase
4.x events increased from roughly 10000/yr to roughly 13000/yr - a 30% increase

For the larger quakes we see over the entire 35 year sample set:
5.x events increased from a previous high of roughly 1550/yr to roughly 1625/yr - a 5% increase
6.x events increased from roughly 100/yr to roughly 150/yr - a 50% increase
7.x events increased from a previous high of roughly 13/yr to roughly 13.75/yr - a 5% increase
8.x events increased from a previous high of roughly .75/yr to roughly 1.75/yr - a 75% increase

Obviously as the sample set get smaller (in the larger magnitude quakes) the error factor goes up. Observing the end of the 8.x graph we can see that if one of the 2007 quakes had occurred just a few months later, in 2008, the spike in 2007 would have looked more like a plateau. However, even this "normalization" would still leave the graph with an activity "high" in the last several years.

I covet any advice from those with statistical analysis knowledge on how to better and more accurately quantify and represent these trends.

On data & image publicity: The data was downloaded from the United States Geological Survey web site and is public domain information. The images were rendered by me using Microsoft Excel and I hereby place them into the public domain.

While others have been keeping an eye on worldwide quakes and US quakes, I decided a while back to keep an eye on the quakes that show up here: http://folkworm.ceri.memphis.edu/recent ... akes0.html
These quakes basically represent the central US but also feature quakes as far east as New York and as far west as Colorado.
Here's a graph that shows the eq action from 12/2008 to 12/2009:

Image

Looking at Emptyd's graphs and others, we can observe an increase in quakes. One thing I found interesting in observing the local quakes is that along with the increase in frequency there has also been an increase in the size of these quakes.

Image

The number of states experiencing quakes in this area month by month has also increased this past year.

Under world's greatest cities, deadly plates
Scientists say Port-au-Prince tragedy is sure to be repeated

Feb. 23, 2010

Megacities are something new on the planet. Earthquakes are something very old. The two are a lethal combination, as seen in the recent tragedy in Port-au-Prince, where more than 200,000 people perished — a catastrophe that scientists say is certain to be repeated somewhere, and probably soon, with death tolls that once again stagger the mind.

In 1800, there was just one city with more than a million people — Beijing. Now there are 381 urban areas with at least 1 million inhabitants. Urbanization crossed a threshold last year when, for the first time, more people lived in city settings than rural ones. About 403 million people live in cities that face significant seismic hazard, according to a recent study by seismologist Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado.

The next Big One could strike Tokyo, Istanbul, Tehran, Mexico City, New Delhi, Kathmandu or the two metropolises near California's San Andreas Fault, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Or it could devastate Dhaka, Jakarta, Karachi, Manila, Cairo, Osaka, Lima or Bogota. The list goes on and on.

"You can name about 25 cities that are like Port-au-Prince. They're not going to shake but every 250 years [on average]. But if you can name 25 of them, you're going to have an event like this every 10 years," said David Wald, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

In many vulnerable cities, people are effectively stacked on top of one another in buildings designed as if earthquakes don't happen. It is not the tremor that kills people in an earthquake but the buildings, routinely constructed on the cheap, using faulty designs and, in some cities, overseen by corrupt inspectors. The difference between life and death is often a matter of how much sand went into the cement or how much steel into a supporting column. Earthquakes might be viewed as acts of God, but their lethality is often a function of masonry.

"In recent earthquakes, buildings have acted as weapons of mass destruction," Bilham writes in the journal Nature.

That is 60 (yes sixty) earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater in the last what?

Year?
6-months?
Month?

No! In the last week! 60 5.0 or greater in the last week! That is more than 37% higher than the average week in the most active year (2007) in the last 30.

I`m praying for those poor people. I`ve never felt an earthquake, except for the bombs, that the Proving Grounds tests, which is bad enough to knock stuff off my shelves at times. I couldn`t imagine what it is like to be shaken for several seconds like that. It would feel like the end of the world. The last 2 days has been like a hurricane here, and that`s scary enough.

I have to say, though, those figures in your post, makes me a bit anxious for california.

I just received the following request for prayer from the mother of a son whose family are missionaries stationed in the Marshall Islands. Brothers and sisters, please join me in prayer for all of these needs, and this need will continue as aftershocks of an earthquake of this magnitude could cause further serious threat:

"please pray for safety for our son and family, other missionaries and people in the Marshall IS and other atolls in the middle of the pacific. Their atoll is FLAT and very narrow and a tsunami would go over the whole atoll! The whole Pacific is involved in this from the quake in Chili."

Brothers and sisters....to go along with the email I posted above requesting prayer, please see the following 2nd email from my friend and mother of the missionary I spoke of. Please continue to prayerfully lift our fellow saints up in prayer as the concern is great:

Here is an update from our son in Marshall IS. The timing there
couldn't be worse since the tide will already be at the highest for
the whole year and then the probability of the tsunami on top of that.

A third email has arrived, this from my friends, the missionary family, themselves. Please continue to pray, especially this evening, before the waves hit their island.

Yes, we just heard about it when we got up a couple hours ago. It is a windy, rainy Sunday morning here. Hawaii should be hit in about 40 minutes from when I type this. After HI it is us, then the rest of Micronesia and Guam, and then on to Japan. We have not heard a time estimate for us, but I am guessing noon to 1 PM local time (that is 7 to 8 PM east coast your Saturday). The waves are traveling at over 500 mph right now. They have moved 50,000 people in HI away from the coast. We are the coast, so of course there is no place to go. They have not yet said if the waves will be big or not. In our favor is that the Marshalls are atolls that rise sharply out of a deep sea, as opposed to a place like HI where the seafloor gradually rises. Thanks for praying. The Lord is in control. If we lose power and have damage (but are still alive) and telecommunications are down, I will try to get word out via ham radio when able.

Earthquake Hits Eastern Turkey; at Least 41 Dead

View the article here

A strong earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6, hit eastern Turkey on Monday, killing at least 41 people and knocking down houses in at least six small villages, the government said.

The quake affected villages near the town of Kovancilar, toppling stone or mud-brick homes and minarets of mosques, officials and media reports said. The worst-hit area was the village of Okcular where some 17 people were reported killed.

I don't know if anyone has posted this here before, but the above is a very cool tool for viewing global earthquake data. I was doing some scratchpad analysis yesterday - and according to this tool the most 6+ seimic events recorded in one year on the database was 1997 with somewhere around 156.

So far this year there have been 42. If you annualize that number out (divide by 2.25 months elapsed so far this year, multiply by 12 months) you get 224.

224 - when the next highest year on record, albeit this database only goes back to 1990, is 156 - thats crazy.
:sheep:

Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. Rev 3:10

Chile Quake moves city more than 10 feet.

- The magnitude-8.8 earthquake that rocked the west coast of Chile last month was violent enough to move the city of Concepcion at least 10 feet to the west and the capital, Santiago, about 11 inches to the west-southwest, researchers said.

The quake also shifted other parts of South America, as far apart as the Falkland Islands and Fortaleza, Brazil.

Santiago, Chile (CNN) -- Three strong earthquakes rocked Chile on Thursday, causing significant damage in at least one city, the country's newly inaugurated president said Thursday.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit at 11:39 a.m. local time (9:39 a.m. ET), followed by a 6.7-magnitude quake 16 minutes later, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. A third, measured at magnitude 6.0, came 27 minutes later.

I don't usually pay attention to quakes below a 5.0, but this headline caught my eye:

Light Quake Hits Northern Israel
The Seismological Institute reported that the quake measured 3.6 on the Richter scale.
Just ten days ago, a 3.4 earthquake was felt in northern Israel. Its epicenter was off southern Lebanon, in the Mediterranean Sea. Just a day before that, a level-6 quake hit Turkey, north of Lebanon, killing dozens.

Magnitude-5.6 quake strikes near Guantanamo, Cuba

By Esteban Israel
Reuters
Saturday, March 20, 2010; 5:51 PM

HAVANA (Reuters) - A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Guantanamo city in eastern Cuba on Saturday, sending residents fleeing into the streets but a local government official said there were no casualties.

A spokesman at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay reported no damage there.

"It's all calm. There's no damage and no victims either," said a local government official in Guantanamo city, who asked not to be named.

State-run Radio Reloj reported from Guantanamo that the quake caused cracks in some buildings and some pieces of masonry fell.

The quake, which also was felt strongly in Cuba's second city of Santiago de Cuba, was centered 27 miles southwest of Guantanamo at a depth of 14 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

"It was very big. I was at my computer and suddenly felt the strong shake and we all went into the street," said Lisset Foster, who rents out rooms at her house in Guantanamo city. "Everyone is in the street."

Residents of Santiago de Cuba, about 32 miles from the epicenter, also felt the temblor.

"It was awful. You could feel it pretty strongly. It lasted longer than normal. Our phones are only receiving calls," Ariadna, a 34-year-old Cuban in the eastern city, told Reuters.

A magnitude-5 quake can cause considerable damage but Chief Petty Officer Bill Mesta, a spokesman at the U.S. Guantanamo base, said none was reported.

No tsunami warning was issued for the region.

The U.S. base in southeastern Cuba was used to transport supplies and personnel to the aid effort after the devastating 7.0-magnitude January 12 quake in Haiti, about 200 miles away.

A prison on the base, set up for terrorism suspects after the September 11, 2001, attacks, houses 188 detainees. President Barack Obama pledged in January 2009 to close the controversial prison within a year but his efforts have been hampered by legal and political hurdles.

WASHINGTON, March 20 (Reuters) - A magnitude-5.3 quake struck in Guatemala on Saturday, about 60 miles (97 km) from the country's border with Mexico, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was centered about 53 miles (85 km) north-northeast of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, at a depth of 51 miles (82 km), the USGS said.

Light earthquake hits Israel

Quake measuring 3.6 on Richter Scale felt in northern Israel; no injuries reported

03.20.10

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter Scale was felt across northern Israel Saturday evening, the Geophysical Institute of Israel said.

No injuries or damages were reported in the quake, whose epicenter was just north of the Sea of Galilee.

The earthquake, which hit Israel at 8:45 pm, was not an unusual incident, the Institute said.

"We got a few phone calls about the quake being felt at communities around the Sea of Galilee," Dr. Rami Hofstater said. "The earthquake was registered and recorded."

A Ynet reader said she felt the quake in Haifa. "The bed moved and the water bottle shook," she wrote. Another reader said that "the earthquake was felt on the Golan Heights." A Golan resident wrote that he felt the quake in his feet. "Nothing moved, it was something very weak, but we felt the quake," he said.

The head of the Mevo'ot Hermon regional council said that the quake was certainly felt in his community, Moshav Sdeh Eliezer.

"For close to 10 seconds the whole house shook and things moved, yet fortunately there were no damages," he said.

About two years ago, on February 15, 2008, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale was felt across Israel. There were no injuries in that quake, which was also felt in Lebanon and Syria. A few days earlier, Israel was hit by a quake measuring 4 on the Richter Scale.

Most Earthquakes in 7 days I have seen!!

Postby ToledoDebbie on Mon Apr 05, 2010 12:25 pm

I just checked the USGS site, and was shocked!!! I have been checking that site everyday for over 5 years, and I have never seen as many earthquakes on this map, as have occurred in the past seven days. They are registering 569 quakes on the map at this website:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/

Anything over 300+ is a really big deal and a lot of quakes. This is literally off the charts!!

Peace,
ToledoDebbie

P.S. Checked the USGS site again this a.m. 4/6/10 and there are now 774 earthquakes listed on the world map. I don't know what others think, but, it sure seems that something is happening, something out of the ordinary. I heard the mainstream media discounting this as mere coincidence. I don't feel that it is!!

I just checked the USGS site, and they now have over 1007 earthquakes listed for the past 7 days, throughout the world. There have been several quite big ones today, with many aftershocks. This is a sign for sure!!!
