Size of the Universe

Postby Jericho on Fri May 15, 2009 1:11 pm

So I guess the big question is why is the Universe so big? To an Evolutionist all that space would seem like a waste. I have one possibility, but I'd like to hear others as well. One reason God may have made the Universe so big is so our ancestors could use the stars to navigate by. It may seem like a small thing but civilization and progress would have been stiffeled without it.

My guess is so that God could show us how much greater He is. He measures the universe by the span of His hand . . . so He made the universe absolutely huge!

To bring Him glory of course. I also think that God creates things to draw mankind to Himself.

It has to be big....we do have eternity to discover and enjoy them ourselves.

Many look at the size of our universe and think that God must have thousands of civilizations out there, and others think we are alone... The truth is there is good reason for believing both.

Look at the incredible diversity of life on just this planet... I find it difficult to believe a God this creative limited himself to one little rock in this entire universe.

Look at the vast expanse of the universe and the potential for billions, if not trillions, of places for life to thrive.

But, as it turns out... the precise amount of mass in our universe was needed for other reasons. It's mass is balanced out to something like 10 to the 23 power decimal places because that level of precision was required to ensure that the right mix of light and heavy elements were formed in the universe. and it was needed to ensure that the four universal forces of physics balanced out in precisely the right way so that stars would form, and planets, and supernovas and white dwarf binaries, all of which are required to create the elements needed to allow life as we know it to exist in the universe.

One simple element... fluorine... is made only on the surface of white dwarf stars in a binary system... by it's periodic Novas. The Gold in your teeth, and all other heavy elements were made in the cataclysms of exploding super-novas. The very dust that makes up our bodies comes from the heart of exploding stars.

So... It is possible that God made the universe this large because it was the precise amount of energy required to make US possible... and the universe itself is a testament to his monumental love for us... and we are alone in the universe.

Reminds me of a joke...

A Group of scientists called on God one day saying that they had now acquired all the knowledge to create life itself and wanted to challenge God... God shows up... cause this he has got to see... and the scientists state their case and say they are prepared to demonstrate that they are just as creative and capable as God is to create a living being.

God stands back and says... go ahead...

The scientists begin scraping together a pile of dust, and God begins the clear his throat... the scientists look up from their work... and God say... "Um... make your own dust!"

When you really stop and realize that to do this one simple task... make the dust that makes US! requires a Universe as immense as ours is... just so the stars can fabricate the materials needed to make us... pretty humbling.
I am not a god or a doctor, and nothing i say should be construed as medical advice or even as correct. I am merely a living soul who is exercising my unalienable rights, endowed upon me by my creator, and recognized in the Constitution for the united States of America, to freely speak about the things i believe. No other soul should grant my words any weight without first determining their credibility and/or accuracy for themselves.

We begin to have a vague idea of the vastness of our God when we see the size of his creation. And then we begin to see the size of his mind and intellect when when we realize that each star is named and numbered by Him.
Psa 147:4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
Just observing.

And it continually makes me shake my head with wonder that we, who are so infinitesimally teeny compared to him and his creation, mean so much to him. How can it be?

When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.

Psalm 8:3-5

My best friend and I were discussing this the other day, and we kicked around the idea of "be fruitful and multiply." Maybe before the Fall, God originally intended for us to multiply to the point of filling not just the Earth but other planets as well! Perhaps at the end of the age, when Christ returns and reigns we will expand beyond the Earth! Of course, this is all purely conjecture you won't find in the Bible, but it is fun to think about.

I seen a show last week on the discovery channel and they showed this image taken from the hubble telescope:

Image

See the cropped section that's kind of a jagged shape? The close up of that section is enlarged, and shows three pillars. Those three pillars are so HUMONGOUS that, check this out, each one of those bright red dots around the tops of the pillars are large enough for our entire solar system to fit inside it.

It's absolutely mind blowing that God has made this universe so big, it just boggles my mind when I really think about it, and makes me feel so much smaller. It's hard to understand why God would love us so much and would be so interested in every little detail of our lives. That we would be the center of His attention. Compared to the universe we are smaller than grains of sand. We are microscopic. And Yet God is higher than all of it and one day soon He will roll up the universe like a scroll.

I think that God made the universe to display His glory and also to humble us. So that we can see how small we are compared to Him.

We are microscopic.

And then to think that God became a man!

I wonder sometimes how absolutely ridiculous the arrogance of man must look. These tiny mortal creatures walking around acting as though they have some sort of power or control. Daring to speak against God. Thinking that we know better than he does. Unbelievable. It's like the gnat and the elephant.

I know...

Isaiah 40:
22 It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
23 He brings the princes to nothing;
He makes the judges of the earth useless.
