Many look at the size of our universe and think that God must have thousands of civilizations out there, and others think we are alone... The truth is there is good reason for believing both.
Look at the incredible diversity of life on just this planet... I find it difficult to believe a God this creative limited himself to one little rock in this entire universe.
Look at the vast expanse of the universe and the potential for billions, if not trillions, of places for life to thrive.
But, as it turns out... the precise amount of mass in our universe was needed for other reasons. It's mass is balanced out to something like 10 to the 23 power decimal places because that level of precision was required to ensure that the right mix of light and heavy elements were formed in the universe. and it was needed to ensure that the four universal forces of physics balanced out in precisely the right way so that stars would form, and planets, and supernovas and white dwarf binaries, all of which are required to create the elements needed to allow life as we know it to exist in the universe.
One simple element... fluorine... is made only on the surface of white dwarf stars in a binary system... by it's periodic Novas. The Gold in your teeth, and all other heavy elements were made in the cataclysms of exploding super-novas. The very dust that makes up our bodies comes from the heart of exploding stars.
So... It is possible that God made the universe this large because it was the precise amount of energy required to make US possible... and the universe itself is a testament to his monumental love for us... and we are alone in the universe.
Reminds me of a joke...
A Group of scientists called on God one day saying that they had now acquired all the knowledge to create life itself and wanted to challenge God... God shows up... cause this he has got to see... and the scientists state their case and say they are prepared to demonstrate that they are just as creative and capable as God is to create a living being.
God stands back and says... go ahead...
The scientists begin scraping together a pile of dust, and God begins the clear his throat... the scientists look up from their work... and God say... "Um... make your own dust!"
When you really stop and realize that to do this one simple task... make the dust that makes US! requires a Universe as immense as ours is... just so the stars can fabricate the materials needed to make us... pretty humbling.
