Pope Reaches Out to Israel by Inviting President to Vatican

Pope Reaches Out to Israel by Inviting President to Vatican
By Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent

Pope Benedict XVI: eager to mend fences with Judaism

ISRAEL’S President is to visit the Pope at the Vatican next month in a move marking a new era of reconciliation between the Roman Catholic and Jewish faiths after centuries of hostility.

The state visit by Moshe Katsav to the Holy See on November 17 has no precedent. “This is an historic event, the first such visit in 2,000 years; this is history in the making,” Oded Ben-Hur, the Israeli Ambassador to the Holy See, said yesterday.

Pope Benedict’s decision to invite the head of the Jewish state to the Vatican will be seen as his latest move to fulfil his inaugural pledge to reach out to other faiths.

The German-born Pope, who was briefly and involuntarily a member of the Nazi Youth, is particularly conscious of the need to mend fences with Judaism, and made a point of visiting a rebuilt synagogue which had been destroyed by the Nazis during his visit to Cologne in August.

Britain’s Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks, called the visit a “further step forward in the transformed relationship between the Catholic Church and the Jewish people; a clear sign of Pope Benedict XVI’s determination to continue the bridge-building work of his predecessors. In a world of destructive religious tensions, the meeting of these two men is a strong signal of promise and hope.”

The Vatican refused to comment on the visit, which has yet to be announced formally, but the Most Rev Kevin McDonald, the Archbishop of Southwark, who is in charge of relations with other faiths for the Catholic bishops of England and Wales, said that the event was of great significance.

“The Vatican has always wanted to try and engage with religious questions separately,” he said. “In the context of relations with the state of Israel, there are political issues as well. Obviously the situation of Christians in the Holy Land and the holy places are important issues for the Holy See and these are things that the Holy See will want to discuss with the Israeli authorities.”

Christianity and Judaism share the same theological heritage in the Hebrew Bible, but early preachers of the Christian gospel inspired anti-Semitism, pogroms, crusades and other persecutions by portraying Jews as Christ-killers and Christianity as the religion that superseded Judaism. Some would argue that those views culminated in the Holocaust.

The Catholic Church initiated a cessation of hostilities with the 1965 document Nostra Aetate (In Our Age) that denounced anti-Semitism and promoted dialogue between Christians and Jews. Israel and the Vatican opened diplomatic relations 12 years ago and the late Pope John Paul II visited Israel in 2000.

News of the Israeli President’s state visit was welcomed by leaders of Britain’s Jewish community.

Rabbi Mark Winer, who is leading a service today at the West London Synagogue to mark the 40th anniversary of Nostra Aetate attended by leading members of the Catholic and Jewish faiths, said: “The world recognises that the Jewish people and the Catholic Church are two of the oldest, if not the oldest, enemies on the face of the Earth. This and the history of the past 40 years give hope to everybody that seemingly intractable problems can be resolved. The fact is, the Jewish and Catholic faiths have been transformed from the worst of enemies to the closest of friends. This is something that should give hope to people of every faith.”

Father Norbert Hoffman, secretary of the Papal Commission for Relations with the Jews, who is in London for the anniversary celebrations, said: “It is a very important visit because Israel for us Catholics is the Holy Land. Relations with the Jewish state are one of the priorities of Pope Benedict.”
nony,

Another interesting date is the 24th October as that was Black Friday of 1929 when the Stock Market crashed 76 years ago.
Another date to remember is November 29th as that is when the UN voted Israel into existence in 1947, 58 years ago.

7 + 6 = 13
5 + 8 = 13

I also find it interesting that both International meetings at the end of October and November are being held over the same two days, notably the 27th and the 28th .

27 + 28 = 55 or 5 x 11.

55 x 2 = 110 or 10 x 11.
Agree in particular with you that the 29th of November (which is the date the UN voted Israel into existence in 1947, 58 years ago) is a significant date and added it to the rolling calendar (it is the second item listed under 11/29/05) soon after receiving your initial email several days ago.
[Thank you, farmer, for finding the info. Edit to add bold per farmer's original post, which believe was intended to bring attention to the fact that the E.U. has a date of mid-2010 to be militarily "ready for action," so to speak (regarding which Herb has posted commentary many times) and also that Spain, Dr. Solana's native country, interestingly holds the 6-month rotating Presidency of the Council of the E.U. for the first half of 2010 and that Belgium, where the E.U. is headquartered in Brussels, holds the 6-month rotating Presidency of the Council of the E.U. for the second half of 2010. (For the uninitiated, mid-2010 would comprise the "mid-point" of the E.U. 7-year budget with its associated funding for the European Neighborhood Policy agreement.)]

Edited by: nonymouse at: 12/27/05 10:01 am

EU internal market commissioner Charlie McCreevy said the new legislation would unify payment rules across all EU member states and increase competition among payment services providers.
EU Agrees to Try to Improve Europol Police Agency (Mtg.2/23)

Postby nonymouse on Sat Jan 14, 2006 6:20 pm

EU Agrees to Try to Improve Europol Police Agency

14/01/2006

European ministers agreed on Saturday to try to make Europol more efficient amid concern that the policing arm is unfocused and unwieldy and that its tasks may overlap with other agencies.

(skip)

"The current procedures are too slow," said European Union counter-terrorism coordinator Gijs de Vries, who took part in the informal meeting in Vienna.

(skip)

De Vries said Europol and EU national justice authorities were cooperating effectively and that the ministers' talks had centred more on how to strengthen the convention or change the legal grounds on which the agency operates.

(skip)

However critics fear that even in a limited role, Europol, whose funding has steadily mounted since its inception, has turned into an information-gathering octopus with little democratic control over it.

France, for its part, expressed concern that the agency was focusing too much on analysis and not providing its justice authorities with precise statistics and facts to act on.

As a first step to revising its operations, the Austrian EU presidency has called a meeting of high-level experts for February 23-24 and hopes to take concrete decisions at a formal meeting of the ministers next month.
Super Bowl XL

This takes place on 2/5/2006 between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks.

Prior to Pittsburgh even being in the running someone was told they would win it.

Apparently Pittsburgh is a very important place.

Pastor David Meyer wrote in his January newsletter - "This coming Superbowl, which is the biggest football game of the year, features half-time entertainment by one of the most occultic music groups that have ever cursed our nation. Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones will be performing and casting their spells into the living rooms of hundreds of millions of viewers. (29) We have also learned that stage magician David Copperfield announced that he will impregnate a woman on stage by magic without touching her, using only his magic wand. EU's Solana to Try to Ease Cartoons Row in Mideast Trip

Postby nonymouse on Wed Feb 08, 2006 5:43 pm

EU's Solana to Try to Ease Cartoons Row in Mideast Trip
08/02/2006

European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana will work to ease tensions in the row over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed during a trip to the Middle East next week, he said Wednesday.

He warned that the dispute, which has seen sometimes violent worldwide protests by Muslims over drawings published in various European newspapers, could seriously strain relations between the Muslim and non-Muslim world.

"Relations between the citizens of the EU and the citizens of the Arab world have been built up with a lot of effort over the years. We must not play with that," he said.

"I plan to take the whole of next week to travel, to visit different countries, meet political leaders as well as community leaders," he told reporters.

Solana will leave Brussels on Sunday or Monday, and travel to Jeddah to meet the head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, as well visiting Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian territories, aides said.
No Desire to Date Set

Postby nonymouse on Sun Feb 12, 2006 12:06 pm

Have no desire to date set but the fact that set time periods were given in scripture (2,520 days, 1,260 days, 1,290 days and 1,335 days) to describe the duration of the 7-year period, and the included 3 1/2 year tribulation, means it was recorded/written with a purpose in mind. Might that purpose be to offer encouragement and solace to His people throughout the days that lie ahead? With that in mind, would like to offer the following for your perusal:

*****

2007-2014

As the 7-year European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) agreement (which begins 01/01/07) may possibly constitute the 7-year covenant foretold in the Book of Daniel, and since the abomination of desolation (aod) occurs mid-point:

01/01/07 + 1,260 = 06/14/10 (Monday, June 14, 2010)

Many tragedies befell the nation of Israel in the month of Av, particularly in the first nine days. The ninth of Av was selected by Jewish rabbis as the representative day for Jewish mourning.

In 2010, the ninth of Av begins at sunset on the 19th of July and ends at sunset on the 20th. (The end of the first 1,260 days period could possibly fall on the fourth/fifth day of Av if the Abib Jewish Calendar, which is based upon the ripeness of the barley harvest for the Firstfruits Festival, is a month early in 2010, as it was in 2005.)

“From the first to the ninth of Av, it is customary to refrain from eating meat or drinking wine (except on the Shabbat) and from wearing new clothing.” (See link for a listing of tragedies that befell the Jewish nation in the month of Av.)

www.jewfaq.org/holidayd.htm

How then are these dates to be reconciled? On the seventh the heathens entered the Temple and ate therein and desecrated it throughout the seventh and eighth and towards dusk of the ninth they set fire to it and it continued to burn the whole of that day. ... How will the Rabbis then [explain the choice of the 9th as the date]?

www.jewfaq.org/holidayd.htm

*****

01/01/07 + 2,520 (1,260 days after mid-point) = 11/25/13 (Monday, November 25, 2013)

Thu. 28 November 2013 Chanukah (begins at sunset on the 27th)

(With a late moon sighting to begin the Jewish month, the end of the 2,520 day period might possibly coincide with Chanukah in 2013?) (Chanukah celebrates the rededication of the Jewish temple during the days of the Maccabees.)

*****

01/01/07 + 2,550 (1,290 days after mid-point) = 12/25/13 (Wednesday, December 25, 2013)

*****

01/01/07 + 2,595 (1,335 days after mid-point) = 02/08/14 (Saturday, February 8, 2014)

(No obvious alignments with any Jewish festivals.)
Rice visit aimed at blocking int'l Hamas funding
By NATHAN GUTTMAN
WASHINGTON

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is embarking Monday on a five-day Middle East visit aimed at ensuring that Arab countries do not provide financial aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority and strengthening the international front against the Hamas.

After an initial decision not to provide direct funds to the Hamas government and to review existing aid programs to the Palestinians, the US is now moving forward with closing possible loopholes that would enable international money to get into Hamas's hands.

On Friday, the State Department announced that the US is demanding the PA return $50 million received during the past year to fund infrastructure projects in the Gaza Strip following disengagement. According to State Department spokesman Sean McCormack, the PA agreed to give back the funds, which will undergo review by the US.

"In the interests of seeing that these funds do not potentially make their way into the coffers of a future Palestinian government, we have asked for it to be returned and the Palestinian Authority has agreed," McCormack said in his daily press briefing.

In addition to blocking any American funds from reaching the PA, the US is also intensifying its efforts to make sure other countries do not fill the financial gap left by the US.
The Sanhedrin's Declaration Concerning...

Postby nonymouse on Sun Mar 19, 2006 9:31 pm

Considering that an official declaration, one way or the other, by the Sanhedrin could possibly greatly influence the upcoming Israeli elections, the following may be of considerable import:

*****

The Sanhedrin's Declaration Concerning the
upcoming State Elections

The Special Court
For Matters Concerning The Nation and the State
under the Auspices of the Sanhedrin

The nascent Sanhedrin, under the leadership of Rabbi Adin Steinzaltz, will hold a one day conference and discussion in the legislative body at which all members are present, titled "Elections and Liberty". It will be held in the Har Nof neighborhood of the Capital, next Tuesday, the twenty first of the month of Adar, 5766 (March 21, 2006).

The assembly will be convened to address the following questions:

1. Is it correct to vote in the elections according to halacha (Jewish Law)
2. If accepted, which candidate(s) are approved by the court

The decisions of the legislature will be announced on this website.

During the course of the assembly, it is expected that the Rabbonim will relate to the events that preceded the elections, and the constraints that caused the elections to be held not in their proper time. The Rabbonim will also relate to the fundamental conditions for the establishment of a lasting Jewish State in our time.

The spokesman, Rabbi Professor Hillel Weiss, explained that the significance of the title "Elections and Liberty" is the result of the insight of our sages: "Do not read chorus - engraving of the Tablets (a play on the word 'elections') , but rather the cheirus - Liberty of the Tablets." (Shemos Rabbah 32:1 on Exodus 34:1) "The Torah that was given at Mount Sinai, is the only possession the Children of Israel has, which will give us underlying freedom from those who seek to destroy us."1
