 Hey Bjorn!Hows it going?
I have a weird one that has been bothering me for sometime...Do you remember when Javier Solana got into his current role/position?WHO was a contender for the job besides him? There was one other person I seem to remember but not his name.I seem to remember Herb commenting on how it was strange at the final moments leading up to him(JS) being awarded the role-the other guy pulled out of the race so to speak-something like that.Herb thought it was strange.I cant find anyhting in the archives on this.Any help would be appreciated!!Thanks
MEL

Hey Mel!
Me pretty sure you think about Joschka Fischer, the former German Foreign Minister, not for the first time, but also almost exactly before one year, we had a discussion here:

"Fischer, 57, was once seen in Brussels as a leading contender to succeed Javier Solana, 63, should the European Union foreign policy chief resign before his term ends in 2009."

I'll have to try to find some of Herbs comments on this...

Got 1 here:

"Why is an observation made by former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer important? It's because of a little known piece of history -- Fischer is the one who came up with the so-called "road map" to Middle East peace Read about it here. In other words, Fischer is a player.

In fact, not long ago Fischer was running neck and neck with the EU's Javier Solana in the race for the EU's new, super Foreign Minster post. Although Solana won the race, Fischer has remained an EU insider of considerable influence."
