My little boy...

My little boy...

Postby PAM on Mon Mar 22, 2004 7:22 pm

If you would, please say a prayer for my little boy. He is having oral surgery this afternoon at 4:30. He is only 4. From what I've read it can be painful, and it takes about 7-14 days to heal. We can't be in the room with him and I don't want him to be scared...makes me sad to think about that.

Anyway, this should help with his speech, which is a good thing, and also prevent any damage to his gums. Thanks in advance, I do appreciate it.

Pam,
I just now read this, so I don't know if he is through with surgery or not. I pray for successful surgery, with little pain for your son. I also pray that he will heal quickly. Let us know how he does.

Let me start by saying, thank you everyone who prayed. I appreciate it so much.

Now....let me say, my head is still spinning here. My husband and I are in agreement that what we just went through is about the weirdest experience for either of us...thankfully my son was not affected by this.

The oral surgeon that we went today, was a nut! I have seen dozens of doctors in my life, but none like this guy. He was a quiet talker, mumbled, did not speak clearly. We could not follow what he was saying. One moment he would say my son needed this done, the next, that it wasn't necessary. Then he said a speech pathologist would say it needed to be done, then he said he didn't need it done. At one point it sounded like he wanted to do the procedure, then in the next breath he didn't.

Then I noticed that he was closing his eyes and just babbling away. I was thinking to myself, "no way are you touching my son!" Then he started to tell us about an apple seed in some womans tooth. He wouldn't shut up about it. The nurses could tell that we were not real thrilled about what was going on. I honestly don't know what to say besides...it was weird.

I think God took good care of my little guy today. Needless to say, we didn't let this guy do anything to him. I think I will be calling his dentist in the morning. Thanks again!

Thanks for asking....we are having to go about this the long way, but it seems the safest and in his best interest way. We know that he has to have a frenectomy done (skin/muscle cut under the upper lip) but the tongue tie may or may not have to be cut.

I finally got an appointment with a speech therapist, which was very hard to get, just yesterday. They made room for him on May 18th. They will evaluate his speech, enunciation, etc and decide if the tongue tie needs to be cut too. Then they want us to take him to an orthodontist, and then finally to an oral surgeon to have what needs to be done, done.

It's been a weird thing, but I think God led us to the right doctors now...the other was a scary man! Yikes. Thanks for your concern, I appreciate it much!

Pam, you did the right thing. Do you have a Children's Hospital near you? Usually they let the parents stay if possible and do everything to make the child comfortable? Does your son have something like a cleft lip?

Children do heal fast, I think it is harder on the parent.

Hi Claire! He has a tongue tie. I always thought that was just a term, but it is an actual condition. The muscle under the tongue is what causes this. Most peoples muscle stops at the base of the tongue underneath, his extends further not allowing him to enunciate some of his letters fully. It holds the tongue down, if that makes sense. The speech therapist will decide if that needs to be cut back.

Also the muscle under his upper lip in the middle extends down further than it should, and that we know has to be cut, there is no "ifs" about that. He looks completely normal, it just can cause damage on down the road to his gums.

It is an outpatient procedure. But I have been told that it takes about 2 weeks for them to heal and that his mouth will be very swollen. Poor little kid will look like his sister punched him.

Edited by: PAM at: 4/20/04 7:07 am
