verse by verse of Mt.24

Postby mrshalfcent on Tue Jan 20, 2004 8:00 am

Along with Herb's post of the seven years, I thought it would be instructive to read through Matthew 24 verse by verse and using only Mark 13 and Luke 21, see what Jesus has to tell us about the timeline of events and what to expect.Because Matthew comes first, I figure that is where we should start.
what do you think? I will start.

Mt.24:1-3 I think we can agree that the destruction of Jerusalem Jesus describes here was fulfilled in 70AD. So let us begin with verse 4-8.
"And Jesus answered and said unto them, 'Take heed that no man decieve you. For many shall come in my name, saying, 'I am Christ and shall decieve many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, see that ye be not troubled, for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in diverse places.
All these things are the beginning of sorrows."

Q. Is there a difference between this description and the Great Tribulation? Why or why not?
I'm raising my hand!!

There is a difference.

The "time of the end" is the 70th week.

The great trubulation is the last 3 1/2 years.

Am I right?
sorrows versus great tribulation

Postby njfish17 on Tue Jan 20, 2004 9:07 am

The beginning of sorrows is prefaced with the end is not yet. After the beginning of sorrows is the abomination of desolation, at which time the great tribulation begins. Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: I don't mean to get ahead of the verse by verse discussion but it was necessary to answer the question.

sorrows and trib.

Postby njfish17 on Tue Jan 20, 2004 9:53 am

After relooking at Matthew 24...it should be pointed out that verses 5-8 describe the beginning of sorrows. If this is the beginning then it is not all the sorrows. The next verse states that then they will deliver you up to tribulation...so this tribulation is part of the sorrows but not the beginning of sorrows. It is possible that the beginning of sorrows will carry into the seven years with the tribulation beginning at the midpoint. Some believe the beginning of sorrows begins at the beginning of the 7 years but I tend to view them as having occurred throughout history and intensifying as time passes until the time of the end. However, it is very clear that the tribulation is viewed as separate from the beginning of sorrows. Jesus clarifies the beginning of the tribulation by stating therefore....in verse15. The beginning of sorrows then the great tribulation, which is stated by Jesus as beginning at the abomination of desolation. I hope I'm not getting ahead but it is impossible to answer the question without the full context.

good thoughts, njfish17!
Let's compare Mt.5-8 with Mark 13:4-8 Luke 21:7-11

what can we add to the Matthew account from Mark and Luke that will help us determine what Jesus means as the 'beginning of sorrows'?

In otherwords, do you think we can identify when the sorrows begin and end?
Why does Jesus zero in on these particular occurrances? (not trying to create something out of whole cloth here, but after these sorrows, Jesus does tell us what will kick off the final 3.5 years. So what makes the time before unique enough to warn us to stay alert and watch?)

I agree...

...with what you have just stated. My question is this: if we are not yet in "the beginning of sorrows" how close are we?
Good question Bruce.
anyone have an idea? Do you think we will know?
Here is one thought.
Herb has been talking about how Solana fits the pic and the beast from the earth and the sea appear to have appeared. So that begs the question....are we already in the sorrows or do we wait for some specific sign?
Will we know when the treaty is signed? will it be obvious or will it be quiet and when would we know...remember the AC operates by deception and flatteries....hmmmm
