Christian heartland opens window into fight for China’s soul

NANYANG, CHINA

The 62-year-old Chinese shopkeeper had waited nearly his entire adult life to see his dream of building a church come true — a brick house with a sunny courtyard and spacious hall with room for 200 believers.
But in March, about a dozen police officers and local officials suddenly showed up at the church on his property and made the frightened congregants disperse. They ordered that the cross, a painting of the Last Supper and Bible verse calligraphy be taken down. And they demanded that all services stop until each person along with the church itself was registered with the government, said the shopkeeper, Guo, who gave his last name only from fear of retribution.
Without warning, Guo and his neighbors in China’s Christian heartland province of Henan had found themselves on the front lines of an ambitious new effort by the officially atheist ruling Communist Party to dictate — and in some cases displace — the practice of faith in the country.

“Xi is a closet Maoist — he is very anxious about thought control,” said Willy Lam, a Chinese politics expert at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. “He definitely does not want people to be faithful members of the church, because then people would profess their allegiance to the church rather than to the party, or more exactly, to Xi himself.”

In the adjoining predominating Hindu nation of Nepal, the majority Hindu Party has passed legislation that prohibits christianity from spreading after the constitution was adopted that the people could worship as they were lead within a secular framework of governance. The Government have recently expelled missionaries from Nepal for preaching salvation and encouraging people to convert to Christianity. A person who is a Christian can practice his religion but he cannot cause others to be persaded to become a christian. Pastors are being put into prision, churchs are being burnt down, the governement is also attempting to dry up funds from coming into the Nepalese churches from overseas.

People are concerned that this will styple the growth of cristianity within Nepal but the reality is that the church in Nepal is growing and increasing in numbers.

After the earthquakes in Nepal a few years ago, the government spent the aid money to rebuild all of the Hindu Temples that had been destroyed and neglected the people who had suffered and whose homes had been destroyed. It was the church with the help of overseas money who helped out the people to rebuild by giving bedding and iron for new roofs for shelters etc. People are still living under plastic while the temples have been repaired and have their new coat of paint to make them look shiny and "good."

Out of oppression the church numbers will surge as more people are are drawn into God's loving embrace as people come to understand that the God of the Christian Church in Nepal offers them certainty and hope.

Sadly we see persecution as being a glass half empty instead of a glass half full that is being contiually topped up by God as His Glory is seen because of the oppression.

Shalom

PS: - In the west we have no need for God or to depend on God unless we want something from Him, like help with a windfall or a free gift because our finances have dried up or we are sick and we want healing, we really have no need to press into God for our needs we have no need to be secure in who God is in our lives.
