Simmering giant: 38 gas emissions reported from Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano

The Popocatepetl volcano registered 38 exhalations in the last 24 hours and one on the morning of Tuesday, was accompanied by slight amount of ash, as reported by the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred). In his report at 11:00 hours, indicated that all the exhalations of the last 24 hours were of low intensity, of which the most important were: one at 15:47 hours on Monday, another at 3:23 and most recently at 8:29, which was accompanied by ash. Bad weather conditions that prevailed during the Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning has obstructed visibility and, therefore, it is unclear which direction dispersed emissions from the volcano traveled.

From the morning until the time of writing this report there is a plume of water vapor and gas that rises a few meters above the crater, due to strong wind that goes to the northwest. The report makes no reference to seismic activity associated with the volcano or possible ashfall in neighboring towns.

Scientists Discover New Super Volcano
As if the end of the Mayan calendar wasn’t enough to have you worrying about mankind’s existence, now another possible apocalyptic event is on the horizon — and it’s based on science!

Scientists report there’s a “super volcano” hidden near the same location where the notorious Mount Vesuvias eruption of 79 A.D. occurred and killed thousands of Pompeii residents. Only now this area of Italy is inhabited by 3 million residents, and the volcano is located in the tourist-heavy Campi Flegrei. This means an exponential number of casualties would arise if a similar event were to occur today.

Making matters worse, the ash emitted into the air by such an event can cause global climate change and lead to catastrophic events which could impact people everywhere.

What exactly is a super volcano? Scientists describe this particular one as a caldera, or cauldron that formed after an earlier eruption caused a collapse of land. Although it is not domed shape, it behaves just like other volcanoes in that it can shoot out magma and ash into the air.

Also, the Campi Flegrei caldera is not the only super volcano out there. There are other calderas in Yellowstone, California, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, and Siberia. However, because it has the potential to impact so many people, Giuseppe De Natale, head of the Italian volcano drilling project, feels it is imperative the study of the Campi Flegrei caldera should take precedence.

Indonesia's Anak Krakatau Volcanic Activity Increases to Almost 90 Eruptions Daily

Bandarlampung - Volcanic ash from the increasingly active Anak Krakatau has reached a number of areas in Lampung, prompting officials on Monday to issue a warning for local residents and tourists.

"The ash was carried by wind from the southeast to the south, reaching Bandarlampung," Nurhuda, who heads the observation and information section of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Lampung, said according to state news agency Antara.

Nurhuda said the ash fell over several subdistricts in Bandarlampung, about 130 kilometers away from Anak Krakatau.

"It is rather unusual for the dust to be this thick," said Juniardi, a resident of Bandarlampung who complained that the falling dust was also hampering visibility.

Officials warned that the ask posed health hazards and asked local residents to wear masks when going outdoors or driving motorcycles.

"We also advise fishermen and tourists not to come within a radius of 3 kilometers of Anak Krakatau. The thick plumes of smoke sent off by Krakatau contain toxic material that is hazardous for your health," said Andi Suhardi, head of the Anak Krakatau observation post in Hargo Pancuran village.

A report from the volcanology office in Bandung shows that the activities of Anak Krakatau has been on the rise over the past few days, reaching almost 90 eruptions per day.

Fuji time bomb: Volcano to erupt under pressure
Japanese scientists predict Mt. Fuji will blow due to new tectonic pressures that are higher than when the volcano last erupted more than 300 years ago. Estimates say the eruption will affect more than 400,000 people and cost over $30 billion.

The National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention has issued a warning that Japan’s 9.0 magnitude undersea quake last year, plus an aftershock four days later near Mt. Fuji, has created large pressure on the volcano’s magma chamber, which could lead to an eruption.

Mt. Fuji has already been classified as an active volcano, but scientists revealed new readings that show that the current pressure is at 1.6 megapascals, nearly 16 times higher than that required to trigger an eruption (0.1 megapascals).

China's Changbaishan volcano showing signs of increased activity
Roughly 1,100 years ago, the Changbaishan volcano that lies along the border between northeastern China and North Korea erupted, sending pyroclastic flows dozens of kilometers and blasting a 5-kilometer (3-mile) wide chunk off of the tip of the stratovolcano.
The eruption, known as the Millennium eruption because of its proximity to the turn of the first millennium, was one of the largest volcanic events in the Common Era. In the subsequent period, there have been three smaller eruptions, the most recent of which took place in 1903. Starting in 1999, spurred by signs of resumed activity, scientists established the Changbaishan Volcano Observatory, a network to track changing gas compositions, seismic activity, and ground deformation. Reporting on the data collected over the past 12 years, Xu et al. find that these volcanic indices each leapt during a period of heightened activity from 2002 to 2006.

Kuril's Alaid volcano wakes up
The Kuril Island volcano named Alaid, in Russia's Far East has begun spewing ash with the giant ash cloud rising to an altitude of up to 700 meters.

The Alaid Volcano is the tallest and northernmost volcano in the islands, with a crater which is approximately 1.5-km-wide.

The first signs of activity were recorded on October 7th when thermal anomalies were observed a cloud of steam appeared.

Volcanologists are issuing warnings regarding the likelihood of an eruption of ash emissions which may reach a height of 10-15 kilometers above sea level.

Poás Volcano rumbles, spits ashes

The Poas Volcano early Sunday awoke residents of the province of Alajuela with a strong rumble.

At about 1 a.m., the volcano’s crater ejected mud and ash more than 500 meters into the air. Ashes traveled hundreds of meters around the national park, rangers reported.

Although the volcano is frequently active, this kind of strong explosion has not been recorded since 2006. Experts said the activity was normal, but they will continue monitoring the volcano.

Poás Volcano National Park will remain open to tourists while experts determine if there is any risk to visitors.

Thousands flee as volatile South American volcano threatens to erupt

Chile and Argentina have evacuated a region near the Copahue volcano in the Andes on the border between the two countries, after fears intensified that it would erupt.

Both South American nations issued red alerts on Monday and put evacuation measures in place, with thousands leaving their homes.

Copahue is covered with glaciers and has around a dozen craters, one of which, “el Agrio” (the bitter one), has been spewing gas for months. The gases have diminished in the last few days but the seismic activity has increased – thousands of minor tremors have been registered in the last 48 hours – leading to the decision to evacuate.

“The situation is extremely complicated,” said Gonzalo Arroyo, regional director of ONEMI, the Chilean Home Office’s Emergency Office. “We’re talking about an up to 95 per cent chance of an eruption.”

Mt. Lokon active volcano erupts

Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, erupted again at 6:30 a.m. local time on Monday, spewing volcanic material from the Tompaluan Lokon crater up to 1,500 meters in the air.

“The lava flow reached several northern area villages, namely Pineleng, Tanawangko and Tateli,” said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Sutopo said the explosion was heard as far away as Minahasa, which is 10 kilometers away from the volcano.

Mt. Lokon has been erupting continuously for years, as such, for the local residents watching the volcano erupt is normal. Moreover, the volcanic materials have made the farming land in Tomohon fertile.

The status of the volcanic activity remains at Siaga or “alert” (level 3), Sutopo explained.
