Toronto Earthquakes 2010 A 5.0 Quake Shakes Canada
http://politics-and-world-5678.blogspot ... quake.html
Earthquakes in 2010 have been numerous, and the Toronto Canada quake is only the latest natural disaster. The earthquake in Toronto was strong, and was even felt in parts of Michigan, Chicago, and even Maine. The epicenter was situated in Quebec, at a depth of 12 miles.

The earthquake could have come at a worse time in Canada. A very important political event is set to take place in the city, as the G-20 and G-8 leaders are set to visit Toronto for important meetings next week. If this would have happened during the summit, it would have been a much bigger issue.

The strange thing about this earthquake is that it comes in a region of the world that isn't used to seismic activity. Many of the earthquakes felt this year have come in areas that are used to having the activity such as the Pacific Rim, California, Latin America, and Haiti.

Rare earthquake shakes Ottawa, Montreal

OTTAWA (AFP) – A strong earthquake shook Ottawa and Montreal in eastern Canada on Wednesday, forcing office workers out onto downtown streets in the nation's capital.

The US Geological Survey reported the temblor of a magnitude of 5.5 hit the Ontario-Quebec border area at 1741 GMT, rattling downtown Ottawa shortly after midday.

The USGS said the epicenter was 61 kilometers (38 miles) north of Ottawa.

AFP journalists witnessed walls in downtown office buildings shook for several seconds. Cracks appeared in the Parliamentary Press Gallery building in Ottawa, and outside. Some people appeared shaken up, but unhurt.

Most downtown Ottawa buildings appeared to have been evacuated as alarms rang out.

James Bowden, a former resident of Alaska who experienced several earthquakes in the US state, was standing in line at a fast-food restaurant on Ottawa's Sparks Street when he said he "heard the earthquake coming a few seconds before it hit."

"It sounded like a freight train barreling towards us," he said.

An avid reader of earthquake sciences, Bowden said Ottawa experiences earthquakes every four or five years. "This one was fairly big," he said.

"It was really... freaky," a pedestrian was overheard saying on her cell phone as she walked by.

6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Solomon Islands

26 June 2010

HONIARA: A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, updating its previous estimate of a 7.1-magnitude quake.

No immediate threat of a tsunami was reported.

The quake struck at a depth of about 30 kilometres (19 miles) with an epicentre 40 kilometres southwest of Kira Kira and 224 kilometres southeast of the capital, Honiara, at 4.30 pm (0530 GMT), the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a bulletin saying "no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data."

However, it warned earthquakes of such a magnitude "sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometres of the earthquake epicentre.

"Authorities in the region of the epicentre should be aware of this possibility and take action."

USGS said that today's earthquake was
not an aftershock to to 7.2 Easter Sunday quake.

Instead, today's quake occurred on a strand of the San Jacinto fault,
the most active --and possibly most dangerous -- system in Southern California.

It is possible that today's quake caused shifting on other faults in the region

Mild earthquake felt across region

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.6 magnitude earthquake centered in Montgomery County at 5:04 a.m. Friday morning.

“We are getting flooded with calls,” a Montgomery County police spokesperson said.

The epicenter was in Gaithersburg at 39.145°N, 77.222°W, the geological agency reported in a preliminary finding. Its depth was 3.1 miles.

Amy Vaughn, a spokesperson for USGS, said the quake was the largest recorded within 50 kilometers of Washington since a database was created to track such activity in 1974. Previously, the largest earthquake reported during that time period was a 2.6 magnitude tremor that occurred in 1990.

"So this is pretty significant for your area," Vaughn said in a telephone interview with WRC-TV (Channel 4).

At the same time, she said, earthquakes are possible anywhere, because of the continual seismic activity under the Earth's crust. "It may be rare and unexpected, but not unheard of," Vaughn said.

Vaughn said USGS was receiving reports from as far away as Pennsylvania from people who had felt the quake. Given the relatively low magnitude of the tremor, she said, it was not likely it caused any significant structural damage.

"It's going to be very widely felt, more than damaging, we suspect," Vaughn said.

Jahi Chikwendiu, a Washington Post photographer, said he heard and felt the tremor at his home in Reston while he was standing in the kitchen. It was strong enough to wake his wife, who was sleeping upstairs, Chikwendiu said.

"I thought it was thunder at first," he said, "until it lasted--for seven seconds or so, I believe."

In one Rockville home, south of the epicenter, the quake manifested itself as a long, slow rumble that was strong enough to wake a sleeping couple but too weak to do any noticeable damage.

DC Conservatives to Take Marriage to High Court
By Nathan Black|Christian Post Reporter

Christians and conservative groups in Washington are determined to take the gay marriage issue to the U.S. Supreme Court after their appeal to let the people vote on the matter was rejected.

"In America, we respect the right to vote. The citizens of the District of Columbia should not have their voices suppressed by the government, but that is exactly what is happening here," said Austin R. Nimocks, senior legal counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund.

In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the D.C. Court of Appeals upheld on Thursday the decision of the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics to block residents from voting on same-sex marriage.

Three major quakes rattle Philippines

MANILA (AFP) – Three major quakes measuring between magnitude 7.3 and 7.4 hit the southern Philippines early Saturday, seismologists said, but there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The underwater quakes struck at a depth of between 575 and 605 kilometres (350 and 375 miles), just over 100 kilometres southwest of Cotabato, in Mindanao, said the US Geological Survey.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no destructive tsunami was generated by the quakes, the first of which hit at 6:08 am (2208 GMT Friday).

"It was kind of mild," said Monisa Tulawie, a staff member at the Cotabato city mayor's office, who told AFP she felt one of the quakes.

Other residents contacted by phone were unaware of what had happened, saying they had not been woken by the tremors.

"We have received no reports of damage or casualties," said local fire official Marlon Macapili of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, a self-ruled area that includes four provinces around Cotabato.

Seismologist Wilmer Legaspi of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quakes were too deep to cause substantial surface damage, although flimsy structures could be vulnerable.

"It can cause damage to buildings made of light materials," he told AFP.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands with many people living in communities close to the sea.

The country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Does anyone know if there have been more than usual earthquakes in central and eastern US since the oil leak ? Just curious.

David, I keep track of that area. While the overall number of quakes for that area didn't go down (they actually increased) the amount of larger quakes (greater than 3.0 quakes) did go down. Another thing that went down was the number of different states that were having the quakes. One other weird thing too, the months of June and July saw AR's quakes go absolutely nuts. For example, in June out of 68 total quakes for the entire area, almost 50 of those occurred in AR.

Another one today in the pacific ocean,

An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude has hit the Mariana Islands region, in the north-western Pacific Ocean, some 375 kilometres west of the US territory of Guam, US geologists say.

I still think it's accurate to say that 2010 has been an extraordinary year for significant seismic activity.

I pull all my data from:
http://www.iris.edu/servlet/eventserver/map.do
this is a powerful tool that allows users to select very specific activity, depth, magnitude date ranges and see all the events that fall into their select criteria.

When I look at 2010, for recorded events of magnitude 6 or greater, there have been 127 events year to date.

If I annualize that number (# of events/number days passed already)*365 days in the year - I get a projection that there will be about 199 events of magnitude 6 or greater this year assuming the trend holds up. I started doing these projections back in March - and all year the trend has held at projecting between 220 and 200 events for the year.

This is really significant, because if I look at each of the last twenty years of IRIS data, the most ever recorded # of events greater than 6 in one year was 154 in 2007. A typical year over the last twenty has been somewhere around 115-120 events. So I ask, when are we going to admit that an increase of 30% over the previous maximum or almost 70% over the norm is a significant increase in significant earthquakes?
:sheep:

Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. Rev 3:10

In Braxton, there's a whole lotta shakin' going on

FRAMETOWN, W.Va. -- What's shaking in Braxton County these days?

For the past five months, pretty much everything - especially the area surrounding the communities of Frametown and Gassaway.

Since April 4, eight small earthquakes have been recorded in Braxton County, and another two in nearby Lewis and Upshur counties. The seismic events ranged in magnitude from 2.2 to 3.4 - not strong enough to cause significant damage, but powerful enough to rattle shelves, awaken sleepers and stimulate speculation as to their origin.

"It's been the big talk of the town," said Geneva Flint, who works at Granny's Kitchen in Frametown. "People would come here and discuss the earthquakes and wonder about what's causing them - but we've had so many now, it's starting to get a little old."

In the Frametown area, the most memorable tremor was the first in this year's series - a 3.4 magnitude quake that took place at 5:10 a.m. on April 4, which was Easter Sunday.

"I thought a tree had fallen on the house," said Lynette Grantham, who lives between Frametown and Gassaway. When she investigated and found that it hadn't, she went online and learned that an earthquake had been recorded.

Because noticeable tremors are such rare occurrences in the area, "Everyone I've talked to thought they were crazy for feeling something that night, until they found out it was an earthquake," Grantham said.

The April 4 earthquake, with an epicenter a few miles west of Frametown, was followed by three quakes on April 29, each of them also centered within a few miles of Frametown and Gassaway. On May 7 and 8, quakes measuring magnitude 2.6 and 2.8, with epicenters on both sides of Interstate 79 near the Servia rest area, were recorded, followed by temblors of magnitude 2.4 and 2.2 on July 24 and 25, both centered just west of Gassaway.

On Aug. 15, a magnitude-2.5 quake was recorded near the community of Ireland, about two miles inside Lewis County from the Braxton County line. A similar size quake took place Aug. 21 a few miles to the southeast at a point just inside the Upshur County boundary near Kanawha Head.

Among area residents puzzled by the profusion of earthquakes in a seismically quiet area was Braxton Citizens' News publisher Ed Given.

"I'm 60, and I've lived here all my life," he said, "and never heard of any earthquakes happening here."

As the quakes continued, Given tried to identify something different taking place in his county that could be related to the increased seismic activity.
