Strong earthquake hits Martinique
Damaged building in Fort-de-France, Martinique - 29/11/2007
The quake's epicentre was 40km from Fort-de-France, Martinique
A strong earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude has hit near the island of Martinique in the eastern Caribbean, the US Geological Survey has said.

The earthquake struck at 1500 (1900 GMT) off the north-west coast of Martinique at a depth of 145.4 kilometres (90.4 miles).

No casualties have been reported and no major tsunami warning has been given.

There have been unconfirmed reports that some buildings have collapsed in Martinique's capital, Fort-de-France.

The earthquake was centred 40km (25 miles) north-west of Fort-de-France, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

'Everything shook'

"For the moment, a building and a bank have collapsed. There is panic, but we do not know if there are casualties," a police source in Fort-de-France told the French news agency AFP.

Callers to Radio Martinique described their fear as the quake struck.

"My house shook so hard I thought it was going to fall. The door, the windows, everything shook," the Associated Press reported one caller as saying.

Map showing earthquake zone
"I wouldn't expect major damage because the quake has some depth," Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado told AP.

There were also reports that the islands of Guadeloupe and Dominica had felt the quake strongly.

Residents on islands further across the eastern Caribbean - as far away as Puerto Rico to the north and Trinidad and Tobago to the south - told the USGS that they had felt the quake.

The tremor was also felt hundreds of miles away in South America.

In the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, 500 miles (800km) from the epicentre, some people evacuated office buildings, Reuters news agency reported.

Fourth Earthquake Shakes Israel

(IsraelNN.com) A mild earthquake, measuring 4.0 on the Richter Scale, was felt throughout Israel Sunday morning, the fourth quake to be registered in the country in the last two weeks. The tremors were felt in Jerusalem, the Coastal plain and in the epicenter, the Dead Sea. Last Saturday, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit just after midnight eminating from Israel's plains area, with no injuries or damage being reported.

Earlier the previous week, two more earthquakes, measuring 3 and 4.2 on the Richter scale, caused no damage or injuries.

Israel recently appointed one of Israel's top seismologists to chair Israel's earthquake preparedness steering committee. The committee has been without a chair for over a year. Analysts speculate that the recent earthquakes have caused renewed concern that Israel will face a more serious earthquake in the near future.

Minister of National Infrastructures Benjamin Ben-Eliezer is expected to request NIS 5 billion from the cabinet to strengthen buildings against earthquakes, including schools, hospitals and kindergartens.

Earthquake shakes Israel, Palestinian territories
The Associated Press
Published: December 2, 2007

JERUSALEM: The fourth earthquake in two weeks shook parts of Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian territories on Sunday, causing no casualties or damage.

The tremor had a magnitude of 4.0
, according to a statement from Israel's Geophysical Institute. Its epicenter was north of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, according to the Israeli institute and Jordan's Natural Resources Authority.

The Dead Sea lies on the Syrian-African rift fault line, where earthquakes are common. The border between Israel and Jordan runs along the rift.

On average, major earthquakes hit the area once a century. But the recent tremors do not indicate that a large-scale quake is on the way, said Dr. Uri Frieslander, director of the Geophysical Institute.

"What we're seeing are typical movements along the Dead Sea valley," Frieslander told Israel Radio.

"These quakes...don't foreshadow anything or indicate that something is about to happen,"
he said.

None of the recent quakes have caused injuries or damage. But in the past, earthquakes have caused serious damage to Safed, Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Nablus, and have damaged holy sites, including the Al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third-holiest site, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, sacred to many Christians as the site of Jesus' crucifixion and burial.

The last major earthquake to strike the area was in 1927. It had a magnitude of more than 6 and killed 500 people. Israeli experts say that because of population growth and poor construction standards in older buildings, an earthquake of the same magnitude today would kill more than 18,000 people.

Magnitude 7.3 quake jolts Aleutian Islands

TOKYO, Dec 19 (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 jolted Alaska's Aleutian Islands in the northern Pacific on Wednesday, Japan's weather agency said, triggering a tsunami advisory for Hawaii.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it had issued a tsunami advisory for the state of Hawaii.

The quake, with its focus about 40 km (25 miles) below the seabed, occurred at 0930 GMT, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which put the magnitude at 7.2, said it was 2,000 km (1,200 miles) west-southwest of Anchorage. (Reporting by Teruaki Ueno)

I wondered about that Roma, especially the magnitude of the quake. It seems there has to be specific conditions to create a sunami from one of these. I am not sure if the geologists understand the mechanics completely.

Greece hit by strong earthquake

A powerful earthquake has hit Greece, shaking buildings and waking people from their sleep.

Greek geologists say the quake - measuring 6.5 - was centred 120km (75 miles) south-west of Athens in the southern Peloponnese region.

But it was very deep, 51km underground, and there were no early reports of casualties or damage.

Reports say the quake was felt over much of Greece, which is the most earthquake-prone country in Europe.

The earthquake struck at 0514 GMT - 0714 local time - while many people were still asleep.

BBC Athens correspondent Malcolm Brabant said the quake shook his house vigorously for 20 seconds and sent him sprinting for the front door.

Residents of the southern town of Kalamata said their houses shook for 40 seconds.

Reports say the quake was also felt in Italy.

The last serious earthquake in Greece killed more than 100 people in September 1999.

Geologists seek answers to recent earthquakes in Ohio

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Geologists are trying to figure out why Ohio has had so many small earthquakes in recent years.

Tuesday's small earthquake under Lake Erie, which was felt by people along the lakeshore, was the 55th recorded quake over 2.0 magnitude in Ohio in the last decade. That's about the same number as in the previous 30 years, according to the Ohio Seismic Network.

There seem to be tons of quakes in the Eastern half of the U. S. lately. The one in W. V. just happened today, and the one in Ohio yesterday. I've been watching this map several times a day for about 3 years or so, and haven't seen this many quakes in the Eastern half of the U. S. at one time. (at least that I can remember)

Mild Earthquake in Lebanon Shakes Up Galilee

(IsraelNN.com) A mild earthquake east of Tyre in Lebanon and measuring 4.0 in the Richter scale was felt in the Upper and Lower Galilee in the pre-dawn hours. Some people in the center of the country also felt it, although there was no damage.

Several government agencies and private companies have warned lately that a large number of buildings in Israel are not built to stand during an earthquake.

Magnitude 5.0 Quake Shakes California-Mexico Border

Postby denise on Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:12 pm

Magnitude 5.0 Quake Shakes California-Mexico Border

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

CALEXICO, Calif. — An earthquake swarm rattling for nearly two weeks under the California-Mexico border region unleashed another nerve-jangling jolt and numerous aftershocks Tuesday.

The day's big quake struck at 2:41 p.m., centered in Mexico about 20 miles southeast of Calexico, a U.S. border city of more than 37,000 residents. There were no reports of any injuries or damage in Imperial County on the U.S. side, authorities said.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake was magnitude 5.0 but USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu said it occurred in the area of a seismic network operated by Mexico which put it at 5.3. Such differing magnitude reports and later adjustments of magnitude are common.

"It started off with a little jolt, then a rumble," said Sgt. Mike Misteriel of the Imperial County Sheriff's Department. The aftershocks producing a rolling sensation, he said.

It was the fourth moderate quake since the swarm began on Feb. 8, raising anxiety in southeastern California and across the border in the sprawling Baja California city of Mexicali.

Some Calexico residents who are used to the region's frequent quakes said they're rattled by the current swarm.

"A lot of my neighbors and co-workers, people in two-story homes, tell me they've been sleeping on the ground floor," said Cesar Aguilar, manager of a duty-free shop. "Me, my wife and kids are all sleeping together in the same room."

Customers have been stocking up on water, batteries, camping equipment and dry food at the local Wal-Mart, an assistant manager said.

"We ran out of flashlights," Manuel Martinez said. "We're calling different places to order some more."

"I was born and raised here, so I've got everything in my house in case of a big one. I probably got some stuff that are expired," he added.

When Tuesday's quake struck, merchants at a shopping center spilled into the parking lot, said Pablo Loo, manager of Calexico Market.

"They didn't want anything to drop on their heads," Loo said, adding that he stayed inside his shop because he's used to the quakes.

"It's Calexico, earthquakes happen all the time," Loo said. "What else can you do but ride with it?"

Enrique Alvarado said he leapt away from a plate-glass window in his office as soon as the shaking started.

"It was a little scary — you stand in the doorways," said Alvarado, who runs a vocational school. "I estimate it went on 25 or 30 seconds, but it feels like an eternity when you're in it."

Calexico Fire Chief Peter Mercado said some residents were overreacting to the swarm because they're influenced by radio reports from Mexicali, where some structures have been visibly damaged by earthquake activity.

"The panic there is being felt here, because people listen to the same newscast, the same radio station," Mercado said. "People are scared of going back inside their homes."

Following one moderate quake last week, up to 30 residents of a three-story retirement home went outside and huddled in the cold, refusing to return to their homes, Mercado said.

"We inspected the building and tried to reassure them that they're safer in the building than outside," he said.

2 Earthquakes Hit Off Oregon Coast

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Two back-to-back earthquakes have struck about 200 miles off the Oregon coast.

The National Earthquake Information Center says there's been no damage and no threat of a tsunami from Monday's quakes.

Don Blakeman of the Golden, Colo.-based center, says preliminary measurements put the magnitudes at about 5.1 and 4.9. He says the quakes hit five minutes apart, shortly before 7 a.m. off the coastal town of Bandon.

Blakeman says the depth of the quakes at the epicenters, a few miles apart, probably was about 6 miles into the earth's crust.

Magnitude 7.2 quake hits China

(CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 hit China on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake, which occurred 20.5 miles below the Earth's surface, hit the border area of western China's Xinjiang and Xizang regions at about 6:30 a.m. local time, according to the USGS.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The USGS considers earthquakes between 7.0 and 7.9 to be "major" earthquakes.

The temblor was followed about 45 minutes later by a magnitude-5.5 aftershock, according to the USGS.

Earthquake strikes northern Chile

A 6.1-magnitude quake has hit northern Chile close to the border with Bolivia, the US Geological Survey reports.

The tremor, whose epicentre was 145km (90 miles) east of the coastal city of Iquique, struck at a depth of more than 120km (74 miles), it adds.

Chile's national emergency bureau (Onemi) said there had so far been no reports of damage, disruption to the power supply, or casualties.

Chile lies in one of the most seismically active areas of the world.

In 1960, it suffered the world's largest recorded earthquake which resulted in thousands of deaths.

Copper mines

Monday's earthquake struck an area where many large copper mines are located. Chile is the biggest copper producer in the world, accounting for one third of the total production.

Miners at the Collahuasi copper mine said they had felt the tremor at around 1630 (2030 GMT), but said it had not caused any damage.

Mining at the Peru's Toquepala mine close to the Chilean border was also not affected.

"For the moment, we have no reports of damage or power disruptions," an official at Onemi told the Reuters news agency shortly after the earthquake.

A 7.8-magnitude tremor in June 2005 close to Monday's epicentre killed 11 people and left thousands homeless.

To feel it 200 miles away is something. I bet it scared you. I know I moved out of California because I hated those earthquakes. Everytime if felt like the earth was going to swallow me up. Don't ever want to feel another earthquake as long as I live.

It was a nice night to sleep with windows open. So when I heard something, I thought it was a sudden windstorm. But when I got up I realized there was no wind.

I found this article interesting, especially some of the info on page 2. I thought some of you other guys interested in earthquakes might too.

Solomons Quake 1st Seen to Jump Tectonic Barrier

A deadly earthquake and tsunami that swept the Solomon Islands last year gained part of its power by breaking through what should have been a major geologic barrier, scientists say.

The April 1, 2007, quake struck in a section of the South Pacific where two tectonic plates, the Australian plate and the Woodlark plate, slide underneath a third, the Pacific plate.

The two plates that are sliding under, or subducting, are moving at slightly different rates and in slightly different directions from each other.

This means there's a fault between them that such a rupture would not ordinarily be expected to cross, said Fred Taylor, a geologist at the University of Texas at Austin and lead author of a new study of the earthquake.

6.8 earthquake shakes Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake off the Japanese coast rattled Tokyo early Wednesday, seismologists and national television said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, though the quake woke up some residents of the capital, public broadcaster NHK said. No tsunami warning had been issued, it added.

The epicenter of the quake that struck at 01:45 (16:45 GMT) was offshore, 160 kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Tokyo and at a depth of 40 kilometers underwater, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

NHK reported that a second quake hit in the same area about half an hour later with a magnitude of 5.3 in the Richter scale.

However, the broadcaster reported that power lines and communications were running normally and no injuries or minor damage had been reported. An hour later, regularly scheduled programming had resumed.

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, although Tokyo has not been hit with a major quake since the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake killed 140,000 people.

An earthquake of that size, about a magnitude 8, occurs once every 200 to 300 years.

6.7 earthquake jolts Guam but no damage is immediately reported

HAGATNA, Guam — The U.S. Geological Survey says an undersea earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 has shaken Guam.

There are no immediate reports of damage in the U.S. territory. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu says the quake failed to generate a destructive, widespread tsunami. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at a depth of about 90 kilometres.

Guam is west of the international date line, almost 6,000 kilometres southwest of Hawaii.
