California earthquake swarms leave residents on edge

Residents in the Imperial County town of Brawley were continuing to assess damage caused by an "earthquake storm" still rumbling underneath the region that has forced school closures and displaced several residents.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, after a series of milder quakes, a magnitude 3.8 temblor hit at 10:02 a.m. Sunday about three miles northwest of Brawley, a 25,000-person city nestled between the San Andreas and Imperial faults. More than 400 quakes have followed, stretching into Monday morning.

Southern California town declares emergency over quake swarm
Aug 29 (Reuters) - The southern California town of Brawley has taken the unusual step of declaring a state of emergency after a swarm of earthquakes rattled nearly 20 mobile homes off their blocks and forced a slaughterhouse to close, the mayor said on Wednesday.

It is uncommon for quake-hardy California cities to declare emergencies due to tremors, but Brawley mayor George Nava said the earthquake swarm is a unique case because it has lasted for days and caused millions of dollars in damage.

Indian Ocean earthquakes triggered quakes globally
by Dan Vergano, USA TODAY
Updated 1h 54m ago

Giant earthquakes that rocked the Indian Ocean in April had global effects, triggering sizable quakes off the Oregon and Mexican coasts and elsewhere, geologists reported Wednesday.

The undersea quakes on April 11, which measured magnitude 8.6 and 8.2, struck about 300 miles southwest of Indonesia's Aceh province. The larger quake was among the 20 most powerful recorded in the past century, and the pair triggered tsunami warnings around the Indian Ocean. Those were soon canceled when only small waves washed onto coastal beaches. But their effects now appear to have been more far-reaching, an idea once seen as unlikely by geologists.

"The energy from the earthquakes radiated sideways around the planet and likely triggered many more events," says Fred Pollitz of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif. He led the analysis in the journal Nature, which looked for links between the quakes April 11 and the jump in quakes of magnitude 5.5 or stronger seen worldwide in the days afterward. The number was five times higher than normal. ...

'Silent Earthquakes' Ripple Under Cascadia
SEATTLE - Parts of Washington and Oregon are in the midst of silent earthquakes this week. You can't feel this so-called "slow slip" quake and it doesn't cause damage. Still, scientists want to learn more about the recently discovered phenomenon.

Little is certain so far, but there's a possibility these deep tremors could trigger a damaging earthquake or serve as a warning bell for the Big One.

Strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake rattles Vanuatu
SYDNEY, Oct 21, 2012 (AFP) - - A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake rattled the South Pacific island of Vanuatu Sunday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 10:00 am (2300 GMT Saturday) 500 kilometres (310 miles) northwest of the capital Port Vila at a depth of 35 kilometres, the United States Geological Survey said.

The USGS had earlier put the magnitude at 6.6.

Vanuatu lies on the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", a zone of frequent seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.

Northern Iceland shaken by moderate earthquakes and tremors
October 21, 2012 – ICELAND – A 4.8 and 5.7 earthquake struck north of Iceland near Siglufjörður, which is home to a thriving community built along the inner coastline. The quakes struck along the northern end of the divergent rift or Mid-Atlantic Ridge that runs through the center of Iceland. The quakes ignited a swarm of hundreds of tremors. A series of 3.0+ magnitude tremors have also occurred in the vicinity of the Krafla volcano, which last erupted in 1985. The Krafla central volcano, located NE of Myvatn Lake, is a topographically indistinct 10-km-wide caldera that is cut by a N-S-trending fissure system. Eruption of a rhyolitic welded tuff about 100,000 years ago was associated with formation of the caldera. Krafla has been the source of many rifting and eruptive events during the Holocene, including two in historical time, during 1724-29 and 1975-84. –The Extinction Protocol

Iceland warns of threat of big earthquake
REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Icelandic authorities warned people in the north of the island on Thursday to prepare for a possible big earthquake after the biggest tremors in the area for 20 years.

The north Atlantic island, where almost 320,000 people live, is a hotspot of volcanic and seismic activity as it straddles a fault in the earth's surface.

The Civil Protection Department said in a statement that recent small quakes in an area under the sea about 20 km (12 miles) off the north of Iceland had prompted it to issue a warning to local people.

It said such shocks, one of which was a magnitude 5.6, often led to stronger quakes. Warnings were issued when there were grounds to expect a natural or manmade event that could threaten health and human safety, it added.

Magnitude 5 earthquake hits. Italy, hospital evacuated
ROME - A magnitude 5 earthquake struck north of Cosenza in southern Italy early on Friday, and police said a hospital had been evacuated after cracks were found in its structure, but there were no reports of injuries.

The quake hit at 1:05 a.m. (2305 GMT on Thursday) about 6.3 km (3.9 miles) underground, north of Cosenza in the Pollino mountains area on the border of the southern regions of Calabria and Basilicata, according to data from the Italian Geophysics Institute (INGV). It said on its website that at least 14 other tremors followed the initial earthquake.

An Italian police official told Reuters a hospital in the small town of Mormanno had been evacuated as a precautionary measure because some cracks were found in its structure.

No injuries were reported, the official said.

Shallow 6.3 quake off west Canada coast
A shallow earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck off British Columbia province on Canada's west coast, the US Geological Survey said, the second powerful earthquake in the region in two days.

The quake, at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), was centred about 245 km (150 miles) southwest of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and struck at about 10.29 p.m. on Monday (0249 GMT Tuesday), the USGS said.

The quake was not expected to generate a tsunami, the USGS's Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.

A tsunami warning was issued for Hawaii after a magnitude 7.7 quake hit off the coast of British Columbia late on Saturday.

B.C. earthquake causing concern in Washington
SEATTLE – At the Seismology Lab at the University of Washington, there is concern that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred on the British Columbia coast over the weekend could affect Washington.

“Earthquakes trigger more earthquakes," said Washington State seismologist John Vidale, who has long studied how different fault zones in Southern California affect each other, and is looking at the potential for the same effects here.

“We need to watch the whole region with extra care,” said Vidale.

4.3 magnitude earthquake reported in Kentucky

6:34PM EST November 10. 2012 -

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey reported Saturday that an earthquake centered in Kentucky also rattled at least eight other states.

The USGS website said the epicenter of the 4.3 magnitude earthquake on Saturday afternoon was about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Whitesburg, near the Virginia line. Residents in both states, as well as West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and Georgia, also reported feeling the temblor.

National Weather Service spokesman Jeff Carico said employees at the office in Jackson, Kentucky, which is about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Whitesburg, felt the ground shake for about 15 seconds. He says the office has gotten numerous calls, but so far no one has reported any serious damage.

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook Guatemala's Pacific coastline on Sunday, just four days after a major quake killed dozens and left thousands without homes in the region.

People fled buildings and homes in panic in cities along Guatemala's coast near its border with Mexico on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or major damage. Locals were further panicked by four aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.0.

Eddy Sanchez, director of Guatemala's National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology and Hydrology, urged residents to avoid returning to buildings and homes with structural damage from the last quake.

Magnitude 6.1 quake shakes central Chile, no damage reported

http://news.yahoo.com/magnitude-5-9-qua ... nance.html

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A strong earthquake shook buildings in the Chilean capital of Santiago on Wednesday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and the country's massive copper mines were not affected.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the 6.1 magnitude quake struck 106 km (66 miles) south-southwest of the port city of Valparaiso. The USGS initially reported the quake as a magnitude 5.9.

"There are no reports of injuries or of any disruption to basic services or infrastructure," Chile's state emergency office said.

The navy said there was no risk that the quake would cause a tsunami on the Andean nation's coastline.

Earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 strikes just south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey says.
http://www.cnn.com/US/?hpt=sitenav

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ... t7#summary
The August 30, 2013 M 7.0 earthquake southeast of Adak, Alaska, occurred as the result of thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate moves towards the northwest with respect to North America at a rate of approximately 73 mm/yr, beginning its descent into the mantle at the Aleutian trench approximately 130 km south of the August 30 earthquake. The depth and mechanism of this earthquake are consistent with it occurring along the megathrust interface between these two plates.
The Aleutians Arc is familiar with large earthquakes –two-dozen events of M 6.5 or larger have occurred over the last century within 250 km of the August 30 earthquake. The largest of these was an Mw 8.6 earthquake in March of 1957, whose hypocenter was located just 15 km south of the August 30 earthquake. Aftershocks associated with the 1957 event extended for more than 1000 km along the arc, roughly from the International Dateline in the west to Unimak Island in the east. The 1957 earthquake also resulted in a large tsunami that was observed throughout the Pacific Basin, and caused damage locally along the Aleutian Arc and in Hawaii. Other large nearby events include the May 1986 Mw 8.0 earthquake 40 km to the southeast, and the June 1996 Mw 7.9 earthquake 150 km to the west. Neither of these more recent events are known to have caused fatalities or significant damage.
Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.

Tectonic Summary
Seismotectonics of the New Guinea Region and Vicinity

The Australia-Pacific plate boundary is over 4000 km long on the northern margin, from the Sunda (Java) trench in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east. The eastern section is over 2300 km long, extending west from northeast of the Australian continent and the Coral Sea until it intersects the east coast of Papua New Guinea. The boundary is dominated by the general northward subduction of the Australia plate.

Along the South Solomon trench, the Australia plate converges with the Pacific plate at a rate of approximately 95 mm/yr towards the east-northeast. Seismicity along the trench is dominantly related to subduction tectonics and large earthquakes are common: there have been 13 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded since 1900. On April 1, 2007, a M8.1 interplate megathrust earthquake occurred at the western end of the trench, generating a tsunami and killing at least 40 people. This was the third M8.1 megathrust event associated with this subduction zone in the past century; the other two occurred in 1939 and 1977.

5.7-magnitude earthquake rocks Indonesia

Jakarta, Sept 10:

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island this morning, the United States Geological Survey has said.

The quake hit at 0311 IST 135 kilometres north-west of Gorontalo city at a depth of 46 km.

The USGS’ Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) system estimated the risk of fatalities and economic damage as very low.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

A 6.1-magnitude quake that struck Aceh province in July killed at least 35 people and left thousands homeless.

Earthquakes in 2013

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of southeast Alaska on January 5

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Santa Cruz Islands on February 6
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Santa Cruz Islands on February 8

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Papua on April 6
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Iran on April 16
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands on April 19

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Tonga on May 23
A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck the Sea of Okhotsk on May 24

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea, on July 7
A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, on July 15

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, on August 30

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Pakistan, on September 24
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Peru, on September 25

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan, on October 25

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake - take your pick. But, what do the scientist have to say about this?

Earthquakes 8.0 magnitude and above have struck at a record rate since 2004. But the increased rate was not statistically different from what you’d expect from random chance.

Furthermore, the scientists could find no plausible physical mechanism that could explain the possible occurrence of global seismic swarms. Hence, even though large earthquakes are infrequent and difficult to analyze, the scientist concluded that the global frequency of large earthquakes is no higher today than it has been in the past.

http://earthsky.org/earth/are-large-ear ... -frequency

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake.
