An Unprecedented Number of Locusts Dominate Southern Iran in 2020

Reports from inside of Iran say that the number of locusts is seven-fold compared to that of 2019; The agricultural and economic ramifications are critical.

As of February, a vast number of locusts have infiltrated the southern region on Iran, creating serious agricultural and therefore economic issues for the already struggling country.

Making matters worse, there really isn’t anything that can be done to counteract the damage or slow down the effects of the locusts except for the use of pesticides. Even then, another problem arises. Reze Mir, who is the spokesman of Plants Protection Organization, stated that “The density of locusts in the swarms is so high that a 10 to 15-centimeter layer of dead locusts forms on the ground after spraying pesticides.”

The head of the Agricultural Jihad Organization, Keykhosrow Changalvai, made a very revealing statement last week when he confirmed that in 2019, the swarms they were dealing with had a span of 1-1.5 kilometers while the swarms they’re experiencing in 2020 range from 7-10 kilometers. He would even emphasize that the dangerous effects of these locusts are just as alarming as the global pandemic of CoVid-19.

I find it an amazing "coincidence" that the countries who are experiencing these biblical plagues are all enemies of the nation of Israel.

Plague of locusts set to descend upon Middle East in time for Passover

‘Extremely alarming’ desert locust swarms forming in Horn of Africa — but will skip Holy Land
By Amanda Borschel-Dan

A plague of locusts the likes of which have been unseen for over 30 years is about to hit Africa and the Middle East. Adding to the perfect biblical storm, the current coronavirus pandemic is affecting travel of international experts and in-country gatherings for training to combat the locust threat, said Rome-based Senior Locust Forecasting Officer Keith Cressman on Monday.

Cressman works at Locust Watch, a division of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, which gives emergency assistance to countries facing desert locust invasions and constantly monitors the status of potential infestations. According to the organization’s most recent forecast report, there are new “extremely alarming” swarms forming in Horn of Africa.

While one locust may not seem a major fresser (eater, Yiddish), the swarms can grow to millions of individuals, “with the capacity to consume the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people.”

The current widespread breeding in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia represents “an unprecedented threat to food security and livelihoods at the beginning of the upcoming cropping season,” writes the Locust Watch website.

"Our Children will Starve’ Say Pakistan Farmers as Locusts Breed
Ismail Dilawar
March 18 2020, (Bloomberg) --

Three swarms of locusts this year have all but wiped out Saadullah Zehri’s wheat crop on his small farm in the mountains of Pakistan's vast and arid Balochistan province. He’s worried about what’s coming next. “Every farmer in the village has lost crops worth hundreds of thousands of rupees,” said Zehri, 33, a bearded father of six. But in the hills surrounding the village of Nur Gamma, two hours’ drive north of the city of Khuzdar, are hundreds of thousands of pods of orange-colored eggs waiting to hatch into a new plague in time to devour his most valuable crop.

“I’ll sow cotton on about 20 to 25 acres for the next harvest,” he said. “But I’m afraid these new locusts will come and destroy our crops again.” Planting of cotton, a mainstay for Pakistan’s farmers, textile mills and clothing factories, begins this month, with harvesting in October. Pakistan has sought help from China to try to wipe out the insects. On Feb. 24, an eight-member Chinese delegation came for a week to assess the condition in the fields. China agreed to provide spraying equipment and 300 tons of pesticide, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said in a statement on March 6. “Chinese technicians will train Pakistani plant protection staff to use the equipment,” it said.

The pest damage could cut Pakistan’s economic growth to less than 2% in the fiscal year ending in June, said Khurram Schehzad, chief executive officer at Karachi based advisory Alpha Beta Core Solutions Pvt. Before the effects of the locusts, the central bank had been forecasting growth of as much as 4%. Add in the impact of the coronavirus on the global economy and the outlook could be even worse

East Africa locust swarms gather as coronavirus curbs delay pesticides

Reuters Friday, 3 April 2020 10:34 GMT
By Omar Mohammed

Delayed deliveries due to the coronavirus means East Africa will run out of pesticides soon as locusts continue to ravage crops

NAIROBI, April 3 (Reuters) - Coronavirus-linked flight restrictions are hampering efforts to wipe out locust swarms on the verge of devastating crops in eastern Africa, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

The curbs have delayed deliveries of pesticides and, at the current rate of spraying, stocks in Kenya will run out within four days, Cyril Ferrand, FAO's head of resilience for Eastern Africa, told Reuters on Thursday.

"If we fail in the current (regional) control operations, because of lack of pesticides, then we could see 4 million more people struggle to feed their families," Ferrand said.

Locust numbers exploded late last year, encouraged by unusual weather patterns amplified by climate change, and swarms disbursed eastwards from Yemen, with Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia the hardest hit countries.
The first invasion that terrorized farmers in a region where 20 million people struggle for food has given birth to a second wave of insects just as new-season crops are being planted.

"They are very active, very voracious, and very mobile," Ferrand said. "...If we don't have pesticides, our planes cannot fly and people cannot spray and if we are not able to control these swarms, we will have big damage to crops."

In Kenya, the FAO was now looking to secure pesticides from local sources, Ferrand said, should the delays continue.
The spreading of the new coronavirus has forced governments to close their borders, reducing cargo flights and disrupting global supply chains, including the production of pesticides in Europe and Asia.

New, larger wave of locusts threatens millions in Africa

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Weeks before the coronavirus spread through much of the world, parts of Africa were already threatened by another kind of plague, the biggest locust outbreak some countries had seen in 70 years.
Now the second wave of the voracious insects, some 20 times the size of the first, is arriving. Billions of the young desert locusts are winging in from breeding grounds in Somalia in search of fresh vegetation springing up with seasonal rains.
Millions of already vulnerable people are at risk. And as they gather to try to combat the locusts, often in vain, they risk spreading the virus — a topic that comes a distant second for many in rural areas.

It is the locusts that “everyone is talking about,” said Yoweri Aboket, a farmer in Uganda. “Once they land in your garden they do total destruction. Some people will even tell you that the locusts are more destructive than the coronavirus. There are even some who don’t believe that the virus will reach here.”

First came the floods. The waters swamped bean and corn fields and created a breeding ground for a swarm of desert locusts the size of Manhattan that fanned out and destroyed a swath of farmland across eight East African nations as large as Oklahoma earlier this year.

Now their offspring are threatening a historic infestation—a second wave of locusts, 20 times as large as the first, that the U.N. warns could chew their way through 2 million square miles of pastureland, farms and gardens, around half the size of Western Europe.

The swarms, which would be by far the largest on record, are expected to descend as the new coronavirus accelerates across East Africa, raising the prospect of a double-shock to some of the world’s poorest and most heavily-indebted economies.

Aid agencies warn that, together, they could lead to a collapse in agricultural production and mass food shortages.

While confirmed cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, are just over 30,000, with some 1,423 deaths, the World Health Organization this week warned that the infection curve on the continent is lagging behind Asia, Europe and the U.S. Some 300,000 Africans could die in the “best-case scenario,” it said.

The timing could scarcely be worse. The next wave of locusts is due to coincide with planting season in East Africa. Experts including the African Development Bank are calling the new swarm “Locust-19,” worried that it will have a similar economic impact as Covid-19. The World Food Program, a U.N. agency, says the impact could push 130 million people to the “brink of starvation” by the end of the year.

Terrifying footage of an apocalyptic swarm of locusts blocking out the sun in Iran has emerged after it was revealed the military could be called to fight a plague that may destroy at least $7billion (£5.7bn) worth of crops.

The chilling video shows a haze formed of millions of the bugs covering the horizon on a motorway in the south of the country. Worried voices can be heard behind the camera as cars seem to stop as they try to get through the swarm. Thousands of the creatures start pummelling the vehicle where the footage was taken.

The plague has been described as one of the worst on record, devastating countries across east Africa, with many commentators claiming its size is “biblical” in proportions. Iran is reportedly considering using the military to help fight the locusts which have invaded the south.

Mohammad Reza Mir, a spokesman for the Agricultural Ministry’s Plant Protection Organisation (PPO), said the desert locusts had attacked more than 200,000 hectares (494,000 acres) of orchards and farmland in seven of Iran's 31 provinces. "The military have promised to help fight the desert locusts, including by providing all-terrain vehicles for use in areas which are hard to access," Mr Mir said.

There are fears the affected area size could soon reach 1 million hectares.
