France's Macron pushes for 'true European army'
6 November 2018

President Macron is visiting a series of monuments this week to mark the centenary of the World War One Armistice

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Europeans cannot be protected without a "true, European army", as he marks the centenary of the World War One Armistice.

On a visit to the former Western Front in Verdun, he said Russia had shown it could be a threat and Europe had to be able "to defend itself better alone". Russia's president will be among world leaders marking the Armistice in Paris.

Mr Macron has already proposed a joint intervention force for crisis missions.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel backed the idea of an intervention force in June, but said it would have to be part of "the structure of defence co-operation".

The UK, while in favour of such a joint force, is opposed to a European army, because of the potential risk of creating a parallel structure to Nato.

Angie's on board too...

Angela Merkel called for the creation of a 'real, true' European army during a speech to EU ministers on Tuesday in a rebuke to President Trump.
The German Chancellor also called for a European Security Council that would be responsible for coordinating defence policy across the continent.
Merkel spoke out after French President Emmanuel Macron floated the same idea last week, and hours after Donald Trump lambasted him for it on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Trump joked that Parisians 'were starting to learn German before the U.S. came along' and liberated France during the Second World War - and told EU leaders to pay their fair share to NATO.

Least we forget that the last two World Wars were started in Europe. Talks about a European army have been going on for a long time. If the AC does come out of Europe, this is exactly what I would expect to see.
