Google Holds Copies of All Emails and All Websites Visited

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, January 30, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Some commentators are describing Google, the world’s most used internet search engine, as “scary,” after learning that the internet giant stores web search history and e-mails.

The UK’s Times on Line reported that Google keeps an “extraordinary amount” of user information. Google logs searches on its search engine, storing the information “indefinitely.” “Because every computer has a unique IP (internet protocol) address, every visit to every website can be traced back to the computer making it – a fact which is well known in geek circles but remarkably under-publicised outside them,” the Times article explained. www.lifesite.net/ldn/2006...13003.html
This news about Google is very scary. Yet someone I knew, inherantly, that someone from Google was "watching" my searches. I don't mean to sound paranoid, it's just that a tool that can provide us with so much information right at our finger tips, would be used for something else. And since this whole world that we live in, lies in the power of the evil one, you know that he has got a purpose for it.

Now Google is in financial trouble.

Quote:
Google Inc. shares sank Wednesday after its earnings report disappointed Wall Street and stunned almost everyone who follows its stock, except the company's founders.

Could they sell our information to the highest bidder? Is there someone out there that wants to know who is onto him? I think maybe.
Is there a safer search engine? What about Metacrawler? Does anyone know anything about that one? I just pulled that one up and it searches all the other search engines including Google, so that makes me think that one probably violates our privacy as well.

From what I'm learning, ALL information stays inside the server and never goes away, and can be retreived at any time, by any server.
This isn't completely true; only Google's servers can access it.
I don't think this is true, either. Google's privacy policy restricts them from doing this legally, I believe.

JP, about three weeks ago Oprah had a person on the show called how it works.

One of the main things she was concerned was information that went from our computers. Whether its going to a site, or e mail, she wanted to know where it went.

I can't remember this mans name but he said everytime we go on the internet that information goes to a server, and most companies like Google share these huge servers.

Anyway, he said no matter what the information is, whether e mail, or visiting a site, all information is stored, and can be sold or given alway.

Now, I'm just repeating what this man said on her show.

And yes, I will watch Oprah if the show has interest to me. This particular show had interest, so I watched.

She was not too happy that where she went on the internet, and her e mails are stored. She said, you mean it just doesn't go away, and he said no, most people don't realize that all information to site seeing to e mails are stored in a server that search engines share.

Well, I know for a fact that Google's server system is not one big server or several big servers for that matter. Google was rather innovative in how it uses tons of smaller machines that are networked together to create one large server network. The only thing is, they don't share it with anyone, and its Google only.

Quote:
Anyway, he said no matter what the information is, whether e mail, or visiting a site, all information is stored, and can be sold or given alway.

Yes, you are very right that it is saved, but like I said, I think their privacy policy restricts them from giving it away or reselling it. They mainly use it to improve their own products (ie, search results and such).

But then again, its not all companies that save info like this on their servers. Some do infact let it go away, though many big ones don't.

I'm not sure if the man just didn't know what he was talking about or what, but not all of what you heard was accurate.

Quote:
Now Google is in financial trouble.

BTW, Google is not in financial trouble. Their stocks were overpriced and are finally heading towards realistic levels. They are still an extremely healthy company.

Really, I wouldn't worry about it. Google does keep a lot of your information but it only uses it to improve its own products. You'd actually be suprised what individuals with no money or connections at all can find out about you, anyway.

Edited by: jesusphreak86 at: 2/2/06 1:57 pm

The thing you must understand is there are so many things that could be used for evil purposes. Heck, how do we know that the $0.99 you spend on a burger at McDonald's isn't being used to support evil causes?

You cannot worry about that stuff. Otherwise you might as well stop using banks or any other place that keeps confidential information that could be used for evil. And again, you might want to stop spending money because people could be using it for evil purposes.

You can only do good as far as you can see and God directs you, and let God take care of the rest.

Dear jesusphreak86,

Believe me, I'm not losing any sleep over it. I use google ALL the time. In fact, I used the google search engine to research the topic. If there comes a day when it comes back to bite me, one thing it will prove is that I'm a Christian and I have ben watching for Jesus' return. So praise the Lord!
I agree with you PrewrathPatty. IMHO, I have nothing to hide or be ashamed in my use of the internet. However, one day information stored on servers such as this may bring evil to my door. I am prepared to be persecuted for my Christian faith.
Understanding that Google (and others) have records of all searches, emails, website visits could cause some people to worry.
